The black-and-white silent movie “The Artist” swept away top honours at the Orange British Academy Film Awards – it was was named the year’s best film, while Michel Hazanavicius bagged the best director and Jean Dujardin the best actor trophies for the film.

Hazanavicius also bagged the best screenplay (original) award for the movie at a gala ceremony at the Royal Opera House here Sunday.

Guillaume Schiffman won the best cinematography award for his work in “The Artist”, while Mark Bridges got the costume design trophy for the film.

Set in 1927, “The Artist” is about a silent movie star George Valentin who fears whether the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion.
