Shah Rukh Khan or simply known as SRK is a very popular Indian movie actor, movie producer, and a television personality. He is often called by different names such as King Khan, Badshah of Bollywood, and King of Bollywood by the media. SRK has worked in almost 80 different movies in his acting career and has won several Filmfare Awards. Recently, he also received the Padma Shri Award from the Government of India for his contributions to the Indian film industry. Khan has also received various international awards such as Legion d’honneur and Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Government of France. SRK has a large fan base in India and also in different parts of the globe. When you talk about income and audience size, SRK can easily be said to be the most successful movie actor in the entire world.
Shahrukh Khan Early Life
Shah Rukh Khan was born on the 2nd of November, 1965 in New Delhi, the capital of the country, in a Muslim family. First five years of his life was spent in the city of Mangalore, Karnataka. His maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, was the chief engineer at the Mangalore port in the 1960s. On the other hand, his paternal grandfather, Jan Muhammad, was from Afghanistan and was an ethnic Pashtun. Meer Taj Mohammad Khan, his father, was an Indian Independence activist in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan, which was a part of India during the British period. Being a follower of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Meer moved to New Delhi in the year 1948 after India and Pakistan were divided.
SRK grew up in the Rajendra Nagar, a neighborhood in New Delhi. His father did a number of businesses, which also included a family restaurant. Thus, they led a middle-class lifestyle. Khan pursued his school education from St. Columba’s School, located in central Delhi. He especially excelled in various types of sports such as football and hockey. SRK was also good in his studies and received the Sword of Honor, which was the highest award in his school. He actually wished to become a professional sportsperson. However, he injured his shoulder during his early years, due to which he had to drop his plan of pursuing sports as his career. He also used to act in various stage plays during his youth days. He won several praises due to his exceptional imitation qualities of several Bollywood actors. His favorites were Mumtaz, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dilip Kumar.
Khan completed his college education from Hansraj College with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. However, he sued to spend a lot of time at TAG or Theatre Action Group of Delhi. Here he learnt how to act under the guidance of Barry John. Once his college education was completed, he decided to pursue his Master’s degree in Mass Communication. However, he dropped midway and decided to pursue acting instead. During his early days in Bollywood, he also attended the National School of Drama situated in Delhi. His father passed away in the year 1981 due to cancer and his mother passed away 10 years later due to complications of diabetes. Since then, his elder sister, Shahnaz Lalarukh, fell into a depressed state of mind. SRK took her responsibility and she still lives with him at his Mumbai residence.
Shah Rukh Khan Acting Career
Shah Rukh Khan started his acting career with a TV series Dil Dariya made by Lekh Tandon. It started shooting in the year 1988. However, there were production delays due to which his second television series Fauji, which released in 1989 became his first acting debut. He played the role of Abhimanyu Rai and the show depicted the training life of army cadets. Later he also acted in Circus, made by Aziz Mirza, which was also a television series. Apart from these major roles, Khan also did minor roles in various other television series such as Umeed and Wagle Ki Duniya.
It was in the year 1991 that he decided to act in movies. He thought this way he can escape the grief of his mother’s death. He shifted his base to Mumbai from Delhi where he quickly signed 4 different Bollywood movies. His first was Dil Aashna Hai, which was a directorial debut of Hema Malini. However, his first film was Deewana, which also featured Divya Bharti and Rishi Kapoor. This movie went on to become a box office hit which also helped him launch his acting career. His role in the movie fetched him his first ever Filmfare Award in the Best Male Debut category. His other movies, apart from Dil Aashna Hai, in the year 1992 were Chamatkar and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.
In the year 1993, Khan acted in villainous roles in 2 of his movies, Darr and Baazigar. Both of these were box office super hits. Darr was the first of several collaborations of Khan with Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films. He played the role of an obsessive lover in the movie. Darr also gave him a nomination for the Best Performance in a Negative Role in the Filmfare Awards ceremony. On the other hand, SRK played the role of an ambiguous avenger in the movie Baazigar. He kills his girlfriend in the movie, which shocked the entire nation. Other actors in Baazigar were Kajol and Shilpa Shetty. Baazigar was also the first of the several other appearances with Kajol. It also helped Khan win his first Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category. That same year, he also acted with Deepa Sahi in Maya Memsaab in which he did a nude scene.
The following year, in 1994, he went on to win Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for his role of a love-struck musician in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa made by Kundan Shah. The movie also featured Suchitra Krishnamurthy and Deepak Tijori. That same year Khan also won the Filmfare Best Villain Award for his obsessive lover role in Anjaam. His co-stars in the movie included Deepak Tijori and Madhuri Dixit.
The year 1995 saw 7 of SRK’s films getting released. The first of the lot was Karan Arjun, which had Salman Khan and Kajol as his co-stars. The movie was so popular that it soon became the second highest grossing movie of the year in the country. His biggest and most significant release that same year was Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge made by Aditya Chopra. He played the role of an NRI who falls in love with the typical Punjabi girl character played by Kajol during a trip to Europe. Although Khan was a bit reluctant in being portrayed as a romantic hero, this movie did establish him as one of the best romantic heroes of India. The movies earned around US$ 17 million worldwide and became the highest grossing production in the country. It was also declared as an all-time blockbuster movie by the box office. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge won 10 Filmfare Awards, which also included the Best Actor award for the second time for SRK.
The following year saw 4 of his movies getting released of which all 4 failed to impress the audiences and critics alike. However, in the year 1997, Shah Rukh appeared opposite Juhi Chawla and Aditya Pancholi in Yes Boss made by Aziz Mirza. The romantic comedy movie won him tons of accolades that also included a nomination in the Filmfare Awards Best Actor category. He went on to play the role of Arjun in the movie Pardes made by Subhash Ghai. The final release of the year was Dil To Pagal Hai in which he worked alongside Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. The movie was basically a love triangle between them. The movie also helped him win his third Best Actor award at the Filmfare Awards ceremony.
In the year 1998, SRK played lead roles in 3 different movies and also did a special appearance in a movie. His first release was Duplicate in which he played a double role opposite Sonali Bendre and Juhi Chawla. The movie was basically an action comedy movie. Khan also worked as a correspondent in Dil Se for which he won critical praise. In the movie he develops an infatuation towards a mysterious girl who is basically a terrorist played by Manisha Koirala. The last movie of the year was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai made by Karan Johar. In this movie he plays the role of a college student and the story is basically on a love triangle. It also featured Kajol and Rani Mukerji. Shah Rukh also won the Best Actor award in the Filmfare Awards ceremony for the second year in a row for his acting skills in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was during this phase that SRK did a lot of family dramas and romantic comedy roles that earned him widespread adulation from audiences of all ages. He had frequent professional associations with Karan Johar, Yash Chopra, and Aditya Chopra, which molded his image as that of a superstar.

Apart being a successful and talented actor, Khan also has his own production company, which is known Red Chillies Entertainment. The company was basically started by himself and his wife Gauri Khan. Till the year 2015, his production company had produced almost 9 different movies. SRK has also sang a few songs in his movies. He has sung in movies such as Josh, Don, and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
Khan has also hosted numerous awards ceremonies in his career. These include Cine Awards, Filmfare Awards, as well as, Screen Awards. He had also replaced Amitabh Bachchan in one of the seasons of Kaun Banega Crorepati, which is the Indian version of the popular America show Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Owner of IPL Cricket Team
IPL or Indian Premier League is one of the highly popular cricket series that is held in different parts of India every year. It played by several teams out of which SRK is the owner of the KKR team or the Kolkata Knight Riders team. In the year 2008 he partnered with Jay Mehta and his wife Juhi Chawla, to acquire the ownership rights of the team. It costed him US$ 75.09 million. Till the year 2009, KKR was one of the richest IPL teams with a total brand value of US$ 42.1 million. Apart from being one of the owners of the team, Khan has also performed with other well-known celebrities, such as Sunidhi Chauhan and Shriya Saran in the opening ceremony of the IPL 2011.
He also appeared in the IPL 2013 with Katrina Kaif, Pitbull, and Deepika Padukone. SRK was banned from the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the year 2012 for 5 years after getting into a serious argument with the security staff post a match between KKR and Mumbai Indians. However, SRK had stated that he had to act that way after he saw children, including his daughter, were getting manhandled by the security and the officials were aggressive in their behavior. However, he did apologize later to his fans and his IPL team.
