Born as Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan and better known as Salman Khan, he happens to be an extremely popular Indian film actor, occasional singer, producer, and also a popular television personality. Khan has been in the Indian Film Industry for more than 30 years during which he has won multiple awards for his acting skills and as a producer. He enjoys a large number of followers both in India and worldwide.

Media also categorizes him as one of the highly successful commercial actors in both Indian and world cinemas. Forbes 2018 had also mentioned him in its list of Top Paid 100 Celebrity Entertainers in the world. He was ranked 82nd worldwide with earnings of around $37.7 million. Khan has been the host of the popular reality TV show Bigg Boss ever since the beginning of the show in the year 2010.

Early Life of Salman Khan

Salman Khan is the eldest son of Salim and Salma Khan. He was born on the 27th of December, 1965 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Salim Khan is a screenwriter and his wife Salma, originally known as Sushila Charak, is a housewife. The paternal ancestors of Khan were Alakozai Pashtuns, who had migrated to Indore, Madhya Pradesh from Swat Valley in Pakistan during the mid-1800s. Abdul Rashid Khan was his grandfather, who was a Deputy Inspector General of the Indore State Police Force. He was also awarded the Diler Jung award. Salman’s mother is from Maharashtra. His step mother, Helen, is also a highly popular film actress of the olden times. Salman has two brothers by the name of Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. They are also popular actors in Bollywood.

Salman started his school life from The Scindia School, Gwalior and studied there for a few years with Arbaaz, his brother. Then, he studied at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, Maharashtra, but dropped out after some time. He finally completed his school education from St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra in Mumbai.

Breakthrough and Debut of Salman Khan

Salman made his debut in the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi in the year 1988. He did a supporting role in the movie. The following year Khan played the role of Prem in Maine Pyar Kiya made by Sooraj R. Barjatya. The movie went on to become a mega hit at the box office and one of the highest-grossing movies in Indian film history. Khan also won the Best Actor award and Best Male Debut nomination at the Filmfare Award ceremony that year. In the days to come, Maine Pyar Kiya was dubbed in English and renamed as When Love Calls. The 125 minute version of the original movie was a super hit in the Caribbean market at Guyana. The movie has also been dubbed in Spanish and Telugu.

In the year 1990, Khan went on to act in other movies such as Baaghi: A Rebel for Love, Patthar Ke Phool, Sanam Bewafa, and Kurbaan. Although the former was a successful movie, the latter 3 were moderately successful. The year 1990 also saw Khan in the movie Saajan alongside Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. The romantic drama went on to become both commercial and critical success.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!! And Other Movies

Salman Khan appeared in Andaz Apna Apna in the year 1994. The movie was made by Rajkumar Santoshi and also featured Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Karishma Kapoor. Although the movie failed at the box office when it was released, it gradually became a cult status over the years. He regained his lost success by collaborating again with Sooraj Barjatya in his next movie Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!! Madhuri Dixit was his co-star in the movie. In the Filmfare Awards ceremony 1995, the movie went on to win 3 awards in the Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Film categories. It also went on to win the National Award for becoming the most popular movie of the year. Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!! went on to earn around US$ 19 million worldwide. This movie also featured in the Box Office India’s list of Biggest Blockbusters Ever in Hindi Cinema. Becoming the fourth highest earner of all time, this movie broke all previously set records and maintained itself for the next 7 years as the highest-grossing Bollywood movie.

In the year 1995 Khan worked with Rakesh Roshan in his new movie Karan Arjun. Shah Rukh Khan was his co-star in the movie. The story of the movie centered on rebirth and the movie itself was a Bollywood musical with its dose of action. The movie was released on the 13th of January, 1995 and went on to become the second biggest hit of that year. Playing the role of Karan in the movie, Khan soon found himself among the nominees for the Best Actor in the Filmfare Awards ceremony. The next year he worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the movie Khamoshi: The Musical. Although the movie was a major failure at the box office, it was critically acclaimed. He also worked with Raj Kanwar for the movie Jeet, which was a hit. Khan has two releases in the year 1997 in the form of Auzaar and Judwaa. The former was basically an action thriller which was below average and the latter was a commercial success, in which he plays a dual role of twins that got separated after birth.

Salman worked in 5 different movies in the year 1998. His first was opposite Kajol and the name of the movie was Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. The movie was a major commercial success and it was followed by Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. In this movie Khan plays the role of a young man who has to bear a child who claims to be his son. His role in this movie earned him several favorable and positive reviews from film critics. The year came to an end with his cameo role in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. His role in this movie fetched him his second Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category.

He went on to work in 3 different movies in the following year. His movies were Hum Saath Saath Hain: We Stand United, Biwi No. 1, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The former two movies were two of the highest grossing movies of the year. Whereas, the third movie, which also features Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai, earned him the Best Actor nomination at that year’s Filmfare Awards ceremony. Along with the music of the film, it also became both commercial and critical success. Salman went on to work in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega in the year 2000. The former was all about surrogacy. Khan plays the role of a rich industrialist who hires a surrogate mother once he finds out that his wife has become infertile. His role in this movie caught the attention of film critics. His movie Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, which was released in the year 2002 had to face a delayed release.

Salman Khan acted in the movie Tere Naam in the year 2003. The movie is still considered as one of his best films along with a critically acclaimed performance. His success at the Indian box office continued with his forthcoming releases such as No Entry in the year 2005, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi in the year 2004, and Baabul and Jaan-E-Mann in the year 2006. Both of the latter movies were major failures at the box office. Khan also acted in other movies in the following years such as Salaam E Ishq, Partner, and Marigold: An Adventure in India. Out of these 3, Partner was the most successful at the box office. However, he did work on other movies in the year 2008, all of which failed miserably at the box office.

Salman has worked on several other movies in the following years. These include Wanted, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, London Dreams, Veer, Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Jai Ho, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Sultan, Tubelight, and Tiger Zinda Hai. Although some of his movies did not create much ripple at the box office, most of his movies went on to make and break several records. He has won many awards during his lifetime as an actor and has tasted success in almost every step of his career. He has acted with several other recognized and popular actors of Bollywood such as Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgan, and Rani Mukherji.

Production

It was the year 2011 that Salman launched his own production company by the name of Salman Khan Being Human Productions or SKBH Productions. The money generated by producing movies are donated to the Being Human organization. Chillar Party was the first movie that was produced under this banner. It won 3 different National Awards in the Best Original Screenplay, Child Artist, and Best Children’s Film categories. He launched another production house under the name of Salman Khan Films or SKF in the year 2014. Dr. Cabbie was the first movie that was released under this production house. It went on to become the second highest grossing movie in Canada. Other movies produced by SKF include Hero and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Salman Khan Television Work

Salman has also worked on television shows. He started his career on TV in the year 2008 as the host on the game show 10 Ka Dum. The show went on to become quite popular in the country and was also the number one show during its time in India. It enjoyed an average TVR of 2.81 and the peak was of 4.5. He also hosted the same show in the following year, which won him the Best Anchor Award for the show 10 Ka Dum in both 2008 and 2009. He also hosted the reality show Bigg Boss season 4 in the year 2010. It is said to be the best ever Bigg Boss season of all time with regards to the TRP. He also went on to host Bigg Boss seasons 8, 9, 10, and 11.

He had supported Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the making of Khamoshi: The Musical, as well as, Hum Dil Chuke Sanam. Salman Khan Personal Life

Khan stays at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, Mumbai. He also owns a 150 acre plot in Panvel which has 3 bungalows and a gym along with a swimming pool. He has never married till date. However, his relationships with different actresses have been the key topic of interest for his fans and media alike. He started dating Aishwarya Rai in the year 1999, which didn’t last for more than a couple of years. Then he started dating Katrina Kaif, which also ended in the year 2010.
