Poonam Amrik Singh, or more popularly known as Poonam Dhillon, is one of the most successful and popular actresses of Bollywood during her times. She was a former Femina Miss India after which she shifted her attention to acting. Poonam has acted in more than 80 movies some of which are still remembered and often shown on various television channels. In recent times, Poonam was seen as a participant in the popular television realty show Bigg Boss in the year 2009 and she was also seen as Sharda Modi in a television series Ekk Nayi Pehchaan that aired on Sony TV in the year 2013.
Poonam Dhillon Early Life
Poonam Dhillon was born on the 18th of April, 1962 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. However, she was brought up in Chandigarh, Punjab. Her father, Amrik Singh Dhillon, was an aeronautical Engineer in the Indian Air Force. On the other hand, her mother, Gurcharan Kaur Dhillon, was a school principal. Poonam also had a brother, Baljinder Singh Dhillon, who had passed away and a sister, Dr. Rishma Dhillon-Pai, who is a Gynecologist.
Poonam completed her school education from Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh. Later, she attended Punjab University in Chandigarh, Jaro Education’s The International Business Institute in Brussels, and Jharkhand Rai University in Ranchi, from where she completed her graduation in Political Science and Economics, MBA, and PhD. Ever since her young age, Poonam had a great interest in sports. She loved to play basketball, skating, and swimming. She was also chosen as the sports captain in school.
Poonam Dhillon Career
Poonam Dhillon started her career as a model. At an early age of 16 years, she was crowned as the Miss Young India 1978. Young Poonam Dhillon was noticed by Yash Chopra, who was a legendary moviemaker during his times. She was also offered a role in his next movie Trishul that released in the year 1978. She performed in a song with Sachin Pilgaonkar named as Gapoochi Gapoochi Gum Gum. This small performance helped her gain the lead role in Chopra’s next project Noorie that released in the year 1979. Poonam was also nominated for the Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress category for her acting skills in the movie.
After this, Poonam worked in almost 90 different movies. She had quite a few movies in her name that got really successful at the box office such as Sohni Mahiwal, Teri Kasam, Red Rose, Nishana, Dard, Yeh Vaada Raha, Romance, Samunder, Sitamgar, and Kasam, to name a few. Poonam Dhillon was often paired opposite Rajesh Khanna and together they performed in a number of movies such as Nishaan, Dard, Awam, Jai Shiv Shankar, and Red Rose.

In the movie Judaai, produced by Boney Kapoor, she performed a cameo role as a favor to Boney after Juhi Chawla dropped out of the role. Poonam is also connected with the world of theatres. She was a part of the production team for the play The Perfect Husband that won the Best Comedy Play award in the year 2005. The play also completed a Golden Jubilee run. After the success of the play, Poonam decided to come up with a sequel and named it as The Perfect Wife. The play featured Sooraj Thapar and herself in the lead roles. She also did another play by the name of Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi with Asif Sheikh. At present Poonam is working on a play by the name of U Turn, which is basically the Hindi version of a Marathi play.
Apart from acting, Poonam is also into business. She ventured into the make-up van business and started the concept in the Indian film industry. She also runs a make-up van company by the name of Vanity. Poonam is also active in various social causes such as AID awareness, drug awareness, organ donation, and family planning. She has also been a prominent speaker at the SAARC business summit at Delhi and Kathmandu where she was also appointed as a cultural ambassador. She did a show to “Save and Empower the Girl Child” in collaboration with the Lilavati Hospital and was also a speaker at the MINDMINE event.
