When it comes to art direction and production designing, you certainly cannot forget about Nitin Chandrakant Desai. He is one of the most popular production designer and art director in the Hindi movie industry. Presently he has turned into a movie and television producer. Nitin is highly popular for his work in several popular movies such as Jodhaa Akbar in the year 2008, Lagaan in the year 2001, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in the year 1999, and Devdas in the year 2002. Nitin has been in the Bollywood industry for well over 20 years and during this long career he has worked with several reputed and experienced directors such as Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Rajkumar Hirani.
Nitin completed his school education at Wamanrao Muranjan High School. He pursued photography at the J.J. School of Art and L.S. Raheja School of Arts in Mumbai before he decided to join the Bollywood Industry.
Immediately after starting work at the Film City Mumbai in 1987, Nitin switched from the age old 2D format of still photography to the highly modern 3D form of art direction. He was the fourth assistant to the noted art director Nitish Roy for the popular television show Tamas, which was directed by Govind Nihalani.
The first movie for Nitin was Bhookamp in the year 1993. The movie was made by Adhikari Brothers. However, the movie that helped him get noticed in the movie industry was 1942: A Love Story that was made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. In the next few years Nitin worked in several movies such as Parinda, Maachis, Khamoshi, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Baadshah, as well as, Raju Chacha. Nitin has also woked in several international movies such as Kama Sutra, Jungle Book, Amok, Salaam Bombay! Holy Smoke, and Such a Long Journey.
In the year 2003, Nitin decided to turn into a movie producer. His first venture was Desh Devi Maa Ashapura, which was a devotional movie. He came up with his own ND studios in the year 2005. The studio is spread across an area of 52 acres. He also switched his attention to producing television series at a later date. He produced Raja Shivchhatrapati, which was a popular Marathi series.
Nitin Chandrakant Desai has worked as an actor in several movies such as Hub Sab Ek Hain, Daud: Fun on the Run, and Hello Jai Hind. He also worked as an art director in quite a few movies such as Parinda, Droh Kaal, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India, Akele Hum Akele Tum, The Don, Diljale, Mela, Khauff, Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Munnabhai M.B.B.S, Lage Raho Munna bhai, Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, Dostana, and Gandhi, My Father, to name a few.
As a production designer his movies include Lagaan, Pitaah, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, Shanti, Fashion, and Jodhaa Akbar. He has won several awards during his entire career that included National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, IIFA, and Screen Awards, to name a few.
