Movie Review: Kurbaan; Star cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Om Puri; Director: Rensil D’Silva; Rating: ***1/2 – A taut thriller.
Love blossoms between a Delhi college professor, Avantika (Kareena) and her newly joined colleague, Ehsaan Khan (Saif). But as she receives a call to join back her University in New York, Ehsaan proposes marriage. While her father initially disapproves of the match because of Ehsaan being a Muslim, he finally gives his nod impressed by Ehsaan’s approach. The couple goes to New York and finds a house in an Indian neighbourhood. But soon Avantika realizes her own husband is a major part of the terrorist sleeper cell operating there and is the reason for aeroplane blast that kills 140 people. She also comes to know that the terror outfit’s next plane is something as big as 9/11. How she unearths the plot with a journalist Riyaaz ‘s (Vivek) aid and what it all leads forms the rest of the plot.
Writer Rensil D’Silva (Rang De Basanti) making his directorial debut with Kurbaan delivers a taut thriller that keeps you engrossed throughout. Despite its long running time of over 2 hours and 40 minutes his gripping narrative has enough twists n turns and chilling moments. Cutting away from commercial cinema traps and unwanted cinematic liberties, he has made Kurbaan one of the best thrillers to be experienced on the big screen in recent times. Without taking any sides, the film manages to strike an impact leaving you shaken with the full of bloodshed climax. Super aid comes in form of Niranjan Iyengar and Anurag Kashyap’s dialogues. They are precise and to the point without sounding preachy. The classroom sequence when American students question discuss terrorism and Islam and Vivek Oberoi’s replies to them is one of the film’s most important and noteworthy sequence. Though the place drops a bit post interval, the 35 – 40 minute long climax keeps you on the edge of your seat. The much talked about love making sequence is very aesthetically shot. Salim Suleiman’s music is good and fits in the movie well with no lip sync songs.
Saif Ali Khan has always been very good whenever he has gone wicked and here as well he comes up triumphs in a grey role. The way he changes his body language and facial expressions from a charming romantic to a cold blooded terrorist is just superb. Kareena Kapoor proves yet again why she is considered a top rated actress today. However, in many emotional sequences she appears very similar in her act to her elder sister, Karisma. After a really very long time Vivek Oberoi leaves you extremely impressed. His mature act is bound to win him many accolades and awards for sure. Om Puri as the terrorist sleeper cell head is very good. Kirron Kher after a long time gets a non-Punjabi mom role and she is has delivered one of her career best performance in this one. Dia Mirza and Nauheed Cyrusi leave you impressed despite their short roles.
Hemant Chaturvedi’s camerawork matches international standards and so does Nakul Kamte’s Sound work.
Finally, a big applause for Karan Johar for making under his Dharma Productions, a film which is very unlike any previous film made under his prestigious banner and one which is not only extremely well made but also very topical.
Nice movie. SRK should have played Saif role.

One more movie is added with a clear typecast of Muslims.This movie will create a negative feeling about educated muslims (that they cant be trusted).Its has so many phrases where they have used repeated dialogue like Allah ki marzi…… so on.I never expected this from karan Johar to make this kind of movie. He has shown women in headscarf and men praying before doing anything bad. Saif inspite of teaching in University go to Jama Maszid to offer prayer eventhough there are thousand mosque to show him praying. I have seen many movies dealing with terrorism but nowhere was like this.Even if you watch Siege starring Denzel Washington which has clearly shown the fight between right and wrong .But this movie has only made the situation worse where people shouldnt trust anybody and see everybody with a suspicion.

Mr Karan Johar, u have put muslims in a very bad position, yes i agree the acting in it and all are good, but u cud have shown a balance in it. in this movie every muslim will be afraid, and every non muslim will be afraid to speak to muslims… youve just created a monster…. not a very good job… yes u will get a lot of fame and money but u have put all muslims down….

Bravo! You’re one of the few Indian producers trying to make movies with more content rather than overdose us with musical numbers that have little to do with the story. I love Hindi films but the dance numbers are waaaaay too much for today’s times. You know what you’re doing Karan, don’t get side lined by single minded critisisims.I hope this a blockbuster for you.Although I am an American still sensitive to terrorist films, I trust yours to be politically correct and I can’t wait for MNIK.

Excellent movie in overall. Must watch. All acted well. Has some reference with New York and Fanaa but will be overlooked for sure. Keeps you on the edge of the seat, high adrenaline until the end. Well placement of the songs and much more.

hey really liked the movie……..showing the real fact that how the terrorists use the local innocent people for their ****** mission. also the female sucide bombers. i think overall movie was nice and there was no nonsense stuff. you stick to your seat till the end.kareena part was amazing.
Good movie with a messege…. Islam never preached violence. Saif & Kareena have done justice with the characters played.

“kurbaan”- a total disaster, waste of time and money, go people, watch “sikander”, one of the best bolly flick in recent times.. but not accepted by the “indian” audience, for whom the star cast is much more important than the movie.. k.j. sucks, and saif & kareena, u’d be better as “p.*’s”..
i went to see the movie after the verdict of taran adarsh, but i m so disappointed by this man who calls himself a “bolly movie” specialist, that after this instance, i’d just say that he should go and start selling fruits and vegetables on the street, ad give a false “review” of the rotten stuff that he’s selling

Another indian movie which based only to degrade Pakistan and Islam both… Pakistanis are the only terrorist in the world…who are even responsible for 9/11….i dont know when India’s jealousy will come to an end and when they will accept Pakistan as a separate nation and country…I think we all pakis and even muslim should boycott with Bolly wood.

On the surface, it looks like it portrays muslims only as terrorists – but if you dig deeper, Karan very poignantly shows the plight of the other side – the muslims in various countries who are victims of western suppression and bombs and acutaly causes us to sympathize with them on some level, having lost innocent loved ones due to war – DID ALL YOU NAY SAYERS FORGET ABOUT THAT ONE??
This film does a great job of showing both sides. These fanatic terrorist groups unfortunately do exist and probably behave exactly as we see in the movie, but people must and should have the common sense to know that these groups probably make up less than .001% of the religion’s approximate 1.66 Billion followers, but sadly give Islam a bad name the world over.
And on a lighter note, don’t knock the “masala” film niche and songs in Bollywood movies – they are what makes this industry unique and when done right, meaning combining a great plot with brilliantly penned songs and beautiful backdrops, it provides the most entertaining type of film genre that exists – better than Hollywood or any other country’s industry! Because, assuming all things being equal to, let’s say a Hollywood film, (script, plot, acting, etc.), Bollywood simply offers more by throwing in music. Of course a poor quality masala flick is no good, but neither is a poor quallity film of any other genre.
Besides, people who don’t like songs in our films usually are just not musically inclined – they are the ones who so rudely turn on their Blackberrys every time the music comes on!
To show the thinking of few people, one movie – New York was more than enough.. y repeat?

Karan johar is a jack ***!! he has either tried to make a commercial movie or has done no research on such a sensitive topic.. that jack *** shows Indians making bombs in their basements, college professors as terrorists without any concrete explanation infact he is more focused between kareena-saif chemistry(which sells btw). Does he have any clue what would be consequences if an average american watches this movie who BTW cant locate india/pakistan on the map. They would **** in their pants if an Indian family buys a house next door. It would definitely arouse a thought in their minds when interacting with any indian/pakistani when earlier they were just fiendly neighbors or educated college professors!!

Well i haven’t seen the movie yet, but I read some bad reviews, really bad reviews. I mean every person in life has a good moment and a bad moment, so maybe it was Karan Johar’s bad time and don’t think that I am saying that he is the best either.
It was really boaring Movie. We do not expect such one from Karan. Even though I saw this movie with my family in NOIDA hall with great expectation, not really worth it, except some of the songs

Regarding ‘Kurbaan’ I’m hearing many differnt approaches of people. I agree its the same typical story we all hear everywhere, but it’s good to be reminded of what happened. I’m standing in the middle of the movie, where I think it’s superb but at the same time showing some negative points. Before people taking this seriously, Karan Johar has tried to put positive points in this film. One, when Vivek O. is in Ehsaan’s classroom. Here it’s shown what the U.S. is clearly doing for their benefits and he didn’t side one culture, religion, or whatever you want to call it. Apart from all the other stories shown about the Terriost attacks and the fights among killing innocent civillians, Johar has presented it very well. He showed how it really goes on beyond our thinking. Most of the scenes shown are already knowleable but I believe the acting, soundtrack, and dialouges were excellent. Kareena and Saif have great chemistry on-screen and they proved out to be good actors. One thing this movie didn’t exceed the standard was the flow. It felt very choppy at times and could have been put together more smoothly. Overall, I would recommend this movie to those who could take the religion/culture topic seriously.

KURBAAN is is a hard hitting movie , people who think that all Muslims are terrorist are fools, but ironically aren’t alltTerrorist Muslim…? . Anyways the movie depicts whats happening right now. There are also positive minded muslims character’s shown like Vivek’s role too .
Saif should be applauded by taking on a great role , Karena does well besides looking her gorgeous self … I really liked the movie. Will keep you engrossed through out till thevery end ….Kudos Karan ,!!! Thanks again for a gem , its great to see you finally making realistic topical movies instead of those soap operas on big screen.

VIVEK’s role is really impressive too , playing a responsible CITIZEN ; while still finding balance in his muslim faith ,Now thats what I call be a progressive musllim and a good human being ! a ROLE MODEL !!!

When DA VIN CHI CODE was released , it was a direct attack on the Christan faith , but you did not see Christians going crazy and calling the world some of the names the people on this blog used that did not look the movie . More such movies with relevant topics should be encouraged !
