Wake up Sid Review
Movie Review: “Wake Up Sid”; Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Rahul Khanna; Director: Ayan Mukerji; Rating: ***1/2
Next time when a star son gets an opportunity to get an author-backed role, let’s not complain. That’s because if he actually goes on to come up with as flawless an act as seen in “Wake Up Sid”, there is no reason why one should really be looking around for anyone else.
Ranbir Kapoor comes up with a neat, simple and believable performance. When most actors would have been happy to establish their standing in Bollywood with a quintessential romantic hero role, Ranbir is anything but a hero here.
This is why he allows himself to be treated as a ‘kid’ by Konkona Sen Sharma, who by the way is happy to play a woman five years elder to him. However, there is this special something which brews between them that pretty much gives the true meaning of a platonic relationship.
There are five things that make “Wake Up Sid” a delightful affair. It has a constant flow throughout; no over the top or understated drama; no ultra emotional strangulation of audiences; absolutely no yuppie cool dude act; and last but not the least, this is an original and refreshing story.
While the film actually becomes really engrossing in the second half, the first half facilitates an adequate groundwork for the story to progress. There are bitter sweet moments in the first half as well but one still wishes for that extra something to kick start that would make “Wake Up Sid” go beyond a regular “coming of age” film.
This is where young director Ayan Mukerji’s writing comes in handy because unlike a conventional movie, he doesn’t just bring a turnaround in Sid’s character by throwing a song to bring in that ‘overnight transformation’.
He keeps it soft and subtle starting from something as simple as Sid learning how to prepare an omelette, keep his comic books stacked, prepare his own bed and of course, earn his very first cheque.
By the time he returns to his dad (Anupam Kher in a short but effective role), you realise that the destination was eventually met even as the journey wasn’t quite ‘on your face’ or ‘over the top’.
Meanwhile Konkona gets yet another complex role for herself. She is brilliant. Watch out for her in the interview scene or the outburst when Ranbir decides to go back to his parents’ house. Her irritation in certain scenes with Ranbir is utterly believable too and so are the tender ways in which she looks after him.
The supporting cast fits in well too. The young man who plays Rishi (Namit Das – last seen in “The President Is Coming” as Ramesh) is just effortless. Kashmira Shah, in her four-scenes act, is a pleasant surprise while Rahul Khanna is decent in the limited footage.
While “Wake Up Sid” would of course raise Ranbir’s stock in months to come, it would be noticed in a major way for Mukerji’s script sense and direction. He makes the kind of debut that made Farhan Akhtar hot property after “Dil Chahta Hai”.

wonderful movie. highly recommend to watch it.
The movie is boring…………………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is wrong with the director….
You cannot use a single instance of failing in the exams, to bring a turning point in somebody’s life….
I suggest get pragmatic to the reality of the world, when depicting a screenplay on the movie….
No hard feelings, but i felt that the film is very hypothetical… far from reality………
I believe the only reason, the film is well received is because of RANBIR KAPOOR, and crazy female fan following behind him,,..
and his acting is really good…
I would rate 2/5 for the movie
and 4/5 for acting skills of RANBIR KAPOOR.
plzzz plzzz publish gud reviews so dat our parentss allow us 2 watch dis movie……
Ranbir on the Rock.

cutemovie…
wake up alll i say …..
n go watch the mo0vie…..
This is utter trash……….. there is life beyond Malabar Hills and the problems an average college student goes through………. a poor copy of a masterpiece called DCH……… and BTW, Konkona looks older than Supriya Pathak in the movie
Though for early college going kids who doesn’t know the real world yet, this movie is the masterpiece of their generation.
For 12-20 year olds – 4 stars
For 20-30 year old rich spoilt kids – 3 stars
For rest – 1/2 stars, if at all, (1 for RK, -1/2 for Konkona)
Wow movie
a great movie everyone shud watch it
RANBIR IS BACK WITH A BANG.RANBIR ROCKS SO DOES KONKONA.GREAT.AYAN IS TERRIFIC.THE STORY IS BRILLIANT.MUSIC COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
The movie is good and very refreshing. I thought i would love Ranbir’s performance, but it is infact and i must say easily, Konkana Sen Sharma who takes the credit away from the main protagonist. She is simply superb and out-flowing in the movie. The subtleness with which she potrays Aisha is seen to be believed. Her expressions, as always, leaves no doubt of what character thinks. The scenes where Ranbir tells her that he is going back, her iritation seeing Sid with the other girl are amazingly done. And the song ‘Ik taara’ sung by Kavita Seth, is the best song of the film and Konkana Sen does full justice to it too…Watch the movie for Konkona Sen Sharma and if you get time, watch Sid also waking up.
Bakwaas movie………. they showed life is easy..
I liked the movie because i can relate myself to Siddhart in this movie..:)

Movie is Brilliant….Konkana Rocks…it would have been ranbir’s debut film…
the movie was gud and both the actors did a good job especially ranbir looking at his past performances this is one of the best one keep it up and i would recommened people to watch this movie!
To tell u frankly, I felt its a film made with a lot of care and compassion. To me, oddly though, a good film is about how well the support cast is portrayed ..and this movie scores brilliantly on it. Be it the **** wannabe model Sonia, the caring Mrs Bapat, the compassionate Sid’s mom, the overweight lakshmi, the crest-fallen Rishi, et al. Few characters but all had their moments of truth nicely strewn in the main story-line. Ranvir is refreshing, believable & dreamy while Konkona is straight yet subtle, tough yet caring. But both their screen timing and spontaneity make their characters & chemistry so special. And what an ending! So yes, after the first viewing, I went for a second time today (you gotta be lucky also for this in Dubai as movies mostly stay here for a week) & thoroughly enjoyed it … the movie keeps on growing on me …

RANBIR WAS THE HEART AND KONKANA WAS THE SOUL OF THE FILM
neva eva miss this film this film iz for todayzz youth
One of the Best movie I saw after JAB WE MET, ayan mukhejee’s direction is superb he was able to bring best from Ranbir Kapoor Konkona Sen , Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Ranbir Kapoor’s friends and Rahul Pendkalkar (the child artist). Ranbir Kapoor’s forthcoming films Ajab Prem ki Ghajab Kahani and Rocket Singh is line up to make the RANBIR KAPOOR the NEW SUPER STAR of the Indian Film Industry.I request karan Johar to pease make WAKE UP SID-2
I too liked the movie….Rather I quite agree with the review posted here.
Wake Up Sid – growing up is not all that bad
Below average flick. doesnt deserve more than a star or two(at the max). Y does audience go ga-ga seeing a offbeat and treated-with-reality flick? i mean, doesn’t the soul matters? i find ‘Wake up Sid’ a soulless effort. Ranbir’s expressions are fake, and so is supriya pathak’s role. Only characters stand out are Konkona’s and Kher’s. Even kashmira, and the marathi neighbourhood impresses more than the protagonists. Sid hardly resembles today’s youth. He is filthy rich and pathetically extravagant. Does that really relates today’s youth? may be Mumbai’s. But not of suburbs and other cities of the country. The movie has nothing new to offer and comparing it to DCH is just insulting the latter’s effort to portray the youth. Ayan’s confusion is clearly visible when the protagonist is trying to portray today’s youth. Ranbir only suits jab se tere naina affairs. His rocke singh is next on release. The traler was squeezed in the interval, but doesn’t seem impressive. Hope shmit amin doesn’t let us down as Ayan did. Letz hope Shmit lives up to expectations that r being raised post-’Chakde!India’.
A must watch movie…
Ranbeer is awesome…
ranbir sucks
Hey… its a new way of seeing our youth, it exists, it is there, lets appreciate the fact that somebody took notice of the change in the youth… and showed it in a very pleasant (trustworthy) tone. As far as *** is concerned, grow-up people the youth is much matured to go gaga about it and may be, just may be we can accept the fact that there is more to a girl other than her ***** to be noticed! Thanks to wake-up sid! Delightful…
Cheers!

What a review! I read through the entire thing and still have absolutely no clue what the basic plot was! You need to go take a class in how to review a movie.
TRUE MOVIE,gud movie, watched it ……love the songs especially iktara and kya karoo…. hey awsum muvi yaar….i luvd it..n wnt 2 c it agn..!! the movi motivated me to work, konkana looking very hot n ranbir too, Movies brings out the freshness of the college Boy, superb movie……….
Good movie
The story was well potrayed. It’s a dream for any girl to meet a handsome and innocent boy like Sid who eventually turns loving and caring. This is the main essence of the film and it makes you feel warm throughout the story line. Konkana and Ranbir well fitted in their characters. This is certainly one of the best recent movies.
