Movie Review: Kaminey; Star cast: Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amole Gupte, Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal; Director: Vishal Bhardwaj; Rating: ***1/2 – Thora Hake – Dhan Te Nan.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s new venture ‘Kaminey’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra is all set to hit the theatres on August 14 sans Mumbai.
Vishal Bhardwaj has successfully executed the story line of ‘Kaminey’ which makes it different from others we have witnessed so far.
After Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’, Vishal pays homage to yesteryears Hindi Cinema that’s reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly awaited movie of 21st century.
Bhardwaj has selected the characters of the movie that we have witnessed on the Silver Screens several times but the presentation of characters in ‘Kaminey’ makes it different and interesting one.
When we talk about Kaminey, it is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable, which is the success mantra of movie.
Apart from this, the hit number ‘Dhan Te Nan’ and Shahid Kapoor’s superb acting makes it exceptional. It’s true, Shahid has proved his metal in the past but ‘Kaminey’ will take him to highest level. Shahid Kapoor’s has played double role in Kaminey and he looks awesome.
The background music of popular song ‘Dhan Te Nan’ will allow your heart to beat faster every time you hear it.
‘Kaminey’ is not about masala film. Actually it is a well thought and beautifully implemented movie. While watching the movie, you have to be attentive. You have to be aware of every goings-on and also the twists in the end.
The story revolves around a pair of twin brothers– Charlie and Guddu (Shahid Kapoor). Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can’t stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross.
Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realises that the love of his life, Sweety (Priyanka Chopra), has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.
The brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams, and their love. And most importantly, realise that all they have is each other.
The title ‘Kaminey’ takes time to justify itself. After twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From thereon, you’re drawn into a different world completely.
The interval raises the bar and also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, ‘Dhan Te Nan’ makes the proceedings exhilarating and stimulating.
But the best part of the movie begins after the interval to the finale. Vishal Bhardwaj has placed all themes so perfectly, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many characters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. However, the violent end might not find universal acceptance.
The direction of Vishal Bhardwaj proves that he is a master storyteller. Shahid really takes a big jump towards stardom with ‘Kaminey’. Priyanka is first-rate. She is so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect. Amole Gupte is outstanding. Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a solid impression.
If you wanna to experience some different stuff, you must book the tickets in advance.
In short, you can experience ‘thora hatke’.

its awsome man, it must have to be awsome after ol its vishal bhardwaj muvi with its signature style, the real hero of muvi is vishal. he is mindblowing. best bollywood muvi in both aspects technical as well as entertainer. must sent for oscar. go and grab the tckt. 4.5/5

Vishal Bharadwaj Dark comedy doesn’t mean that the audience are not able to see the movie as it is always black and dark that one has to guess who is on screen.
I think the cameraman has Parkinson disease otherwise why would the shot shake up so much.
Critics liked it as they did not understand, or were able to make out what you have made.I want my money back.
Its awesome.. near real life.. no corny dialogues.. no **** melodrama.. pure content. A superb mix which shows humour even in violence.
@ the guy above complaining about camerawork – camera shaking and all.. it is deliberately done. It makes u fell as if u are watching the character closely. Go watch top notch movies like Bourne Ultimatum and u’ll know why this is being increasingly adopted these days..
Thumbs up to the entire Kaminey crew.. U might have redefined the boundaries of bollywood. Hope others learn from this masterpiece..

still i can’t believe how shahid receive a ragiv gandi award he is deserving 4 bad acting
Just watched it again. Observed a couple of things. Was it a coincidence that :
• Tashi & BHope Bhau wife’s name are anagrams.
• The no. on moped on which Guddu comes for his wedding and the no. of police vehicle on which he is taken to jail are complementary numbers.
• All characters and side characters are named such that Charlie can’t pronounce their full name correctly.
• The auditorium at which Guddu is getting married is hexadecimal representation of room no. In which Charlie goes to meet Fransis, at the same time.
• Both Guddu and Charlie’s friends are shown with coke. One with the famous beverage , the other with the drug.
• The theme song “ Go Charlie” comes twice in the movie. Once there is some birthday party in background and in the other instance he bumps into a wedding procession and both times he is running for his life. Irony !!
• The word ‘matlab’ is repeated by both Guddu & Charlie at different times in the movie for exactly opposite effect.
• Pun with words like Tope ( Gun & Title ) and Bhau- Bow
• Lyrics of the song phatak use the word Safe ( saif ) and that of Kameeney uses kareene ( Kareena )
…Or all of it was meant for intelligent audience to figure out.
cant expect less than 4 stars for kaminey….ur giving it just 3 and half….thats surprising man….its 1 of the best movies we have got in a long run….and im sure next year it will be ull of awards..including best film best director and surely best actor for shahid kapoor….
how can u give such a movie3.5 stars….it should be given minimum 4 and realistically 5 stars….
