Movie Review: New York; Star Cast: John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan; Director: Kabir Khan; Rating: ***1/2 – Is a must watch.
Omar (Neil) is picked up by the FBI and detained for arms found in his owned taxi. Basically it’s a well planned set up by FBI officer Roshan (Irrfan) and his boss to get Omar agreeing on to work as an undercover agent for them and infiltrate the family the life of Samir (John) and Maya (Katrina) who were Omar’s college friends 7-8 years back. Roshan suspects Samir of running a sleeper terrorism cell and he wants to nab him red handed. Omar is left with no option but to comply with Roshan’s orders but he agrees on one condition that the FBI won’t kill Samir if he agrees to surrender. Years back when in college Omar, Maya and Samir were thick buddies and Omar silently loved Maya but when she expressed her love for Samir, Omar had gone away from them. What truth Omar uncovers when he meets Samir and Maya both now a married couple with a small kid Danielle and what it all leads to forms the rest of the film.
New York can easily be considered the best film to come out of the Yash Raj stable after Chak De India. Shot entirely in the US, the film not only is on par with the best of the Hollywood films made in this genre but is a completely different experience which the Bollywood audience is not used to. You are completely hooked from the first scene of the film when Neil is arrested by FBI and the interrogation that follows by Irrfan of Neil’s. The first half is extremely well narrated and keeps you constantly guessing as to what will happen next. The interval point is a shocker and you look forward to an exciting second half. But then the pace of the second half somehow doesn’t match up that of the first half and there are some predictable things in store. But nonetheless it is packed with some really great moments. The whole frisking episode of Katrina Kaif by a cop on the road late at night and the sequences that follow it linger on your mind for long. The climax though a bit word heavy is superbly shot as well. The torture scenes shown immediately post the interval send a shiver down your spine. Pritam’s music is easy on the ears and there are no lip sync songs to hamper the proceedings.
New York scores high in the acting department with each single actor delivering his/her best. John Abraham often termed as an expressionless actor has delivered his career’s finest performance. Katrina Kaif has finally got the meatiest role of her career and she has taken full advantage of it. She is very good in emotional scenes as well. Neil in a difficult part shines. Irrfan Khan never disappoints and here again he is in great form. His scenes with Neil and also his senior officer have turned out well.
New York takes up a topical theme and perfectly exposes the wily ways of the American FBI to which over hundreds of innocent Muslim people had fallen prey to post 9/11. It is a must watch for many reasons so just don’t miss it. -Sampurn

To the guy who said girls are jealous of Katrina and therefore jealous I have someone to say to you buddy : Constructive criticism is not jealousy.
Yes she is beautiful but not once have I seen Katrina convince me of her role/character. When was the last time u saw a actress have a substantial role in a movie? ….Minus Aishwarya and Priyanka ….Bollywood is full of bimbo-heads only expected to look pretty!…All the talent in the world– us audiences dont really care about when it comes to females. Esp once they reach a certain point and stop looking “****” — i.e. all the actresses post 30 are history! Meanwhile 40 + buddhas dancing around romancing women half their age are considered **** and hot! …I’m glad these young actors had the courage to do something different in the movie ‘New York’ But Katrina could not at all convince me!….Hindi ‘IS’ her 2nd language. thats a known fact. && how can you in your 2nd language, when acting, try to feel the emotions of that language as well? Yes emotions are universal but the way an american (And yes she very much is american despite being born to a kashmiri dad cuz of her upbringing) senses emotions and a indian (ON SCREEN) are 2 different things and honestly….she kud be romantic or emotional and crying and never convinces me of either of the 2!…im not being overally critical… All u ever hear about her is she is pretty she is pretty! Even in the review of this movie its mostly said she is pretty and that she tried something different…not that she ACTed well! … If looking beautiful is the only priority in this industry and ofcourse she is also dating a famous name then damn! Being an ‘act’ress in this industry is a joke!

If emotion would change with language then actors in India would not successful in many regional movies. Think about it.
great movie…..as a Muslim I can appreciate how challenging it might have been to make a commercial Bollywood movie with popular actors on this topic…the writers were fair in their portrayal and not biased towards either side…..only things I didn’t like were the ending (shouldn’t have happened the way it did), and the fact that their son was clearly a white kid (not realistic at all)…and you think the fbi would be smart enough to do background checks on their workers and recognize who is wanted!

The movie was great!!..all the actors did a good job especially John and Katrina who seem to have improved tremendously in this film and even have some really good scenes…Niel was definitely a surprise..he was incredibly natural…All in all a good movie with a good story and the songs went well with the theme of the movie. For those who complain that it was unrealistic…All Hindi movies have an unrealistic element to it…at least this movie made far more sense with a good moral at the end:)

For an Indian (read me), story line of the movie brings an element of disrespect towards American culture on the whole. The culture of chauvinism has been portrayed to the extent that a Muslim’s self respect goes for a toss. The Americans make mistakes and get away with it – putting odd 1200 Muslims in detention center without concrete proofs, shooting the terrorist (who was an American citizen but had a Muslim name) and his wife even when he surrenders and when they had promised to not shoot the terrorist etc. They picked Muslims left right and center, without concrete evidences, just because they were overly cautious about their country after 9/11. The barbarous treatment at detention center and that too to the people against whom they did not have enough proofs, was enough to give you goose bumps.
As an Indian, sitting in the US and watching this movie with fellow Americans was not the best thing that I would have done yesterday.

I have very mixed feeling about this movie. I agree that it hooks you in from the beginning and that it keeps you wanting more. But in the end it fails to deliver any tue substance. I completely felt that the comedic scenes, though funny, should have been left for a less serious movie. It is way too serious of a topic to make into something humorous, even if it is trying to lighten the mood. There are some really unrealistic parts in the movie. After 9/11 when Neil leave “that night”- the entire country was on lockdown- he couldnt have left. And the fact that the kid was cheered and hailed at the end of the movie? That would never happen. And the reasons behind the justification of the actions by Irrfan were ridiculous. In the end, i praise the directors for bringing up the topic but just wsh it was done with a bit more respect for the 1200+ people who have suffered through this ordeal.
Simply fantastic.. let it be John’s ever finest potrayal of his character; or be Irrfan who does true justice to what his role demands; or be Katrina who showed a very different performance this time.. emotional as well as fun-loving.. but I saw Neil acting 1st time, he was too good at places which demanded seriousness.. Overall, I felt that after a long time.. has come a movie which I won’t mind watching number of times in theatre..
First half is the best, comparitively, as it shows the college life.. That was so good.. But at one moment, a shock wave trespassed my spine.. when john was being tortured in the detention centre.. such brutality, scary.. The background music theme added the whole effect.. fantabulous! good job..

nice typical indian movie,,, where u laugh in some scenes .. like john abraham was planting a bomb on the fbi building and snipers cant aim for the head … etc … but KHUDA KAY LIYE was a movie that leaves an impact on you for a long time ,,, this was a happy go lucky kind of a thing

*One of the best parts, no dramatic unsudden irrelvent songs
*Excellent dailogs full of wit.
*Good message with good learnings like “its a general human psyche of keep thinking of past and relate every course of action with that e.g a guy who killed police officer and later jumped frm the building, he was just relating every incedent with his experience in detension”
*i wish we can hav more people with cool atitude like Kartina, just simply loving people all around.

Really good movie. Probably the best movie of 2009. But a large part of it was inspired by Khuda Ke Liye which was decidedly better than this movie.

Yash Raj has certainly outdone himself with this movie and also the acting COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER…each and everyone of them. Acting, Dialogue, plot, flow…the movie never seized to surprise you. IM SUPER impressed…and it was dont without SRK. Thats a first!

i like the film also i like the story when actors was telling about. im glad they have made new york movie about 9/11 in usa. i was impressed about the movie, john looks very cool and hot, katrina acts the same in movies as normall actress does, when they shown 9/11 on tv in news in film that how i really felt about that i was shocked to see the 9/11 in real life.

I think this movie is great. The story tell us to think about the victims of tons of people who were tortured by FBI. They were innocent and genuine. I was crying for the victims. This movie tell us a great message. I’d like to give 5 stars of 5. It is awesome movie. Now I understand why some Muslem people become terrorist. Their horrible experience make them hate the government. The USA have to bring up change in soceity of Muslem. Those Muslem living in US are the same as American. Their religion have to be respected as Christion religion.
