Gulal Review
Movie Review: Gulaal; Star cast: Kay Kay Menon, introducing Raj Singh Chaudhary, Jesse Randhawa, Deepak Dobriyal, Aditya Srivastava, Ayesha Mohan, Piyush Mishra and Abhimanyu Singh; Director: Anurag Kashyap; Rating: **** – Anurag Kashyap’s best film by far.
Set in the fictional Rajpur town of modern-day Rajasthan, Gulaal is entangled with stories of student politics, a covertly taking shape local rebellion for an independent Rajputana stare and love taking it forward. The meek, Dileep Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary), is an idealistic man who gets caught in the whirlpool of student politics and much more, as he gets sucked into the world of Rananjay (Abhimanyu Singh), Dukkey Bana (Kay Kay), an autocratic local Rajput leader who is leading a planned armed movement to reclaim Rajputana for Rajputs, a brother-sister couple (Aditya and Ayesha), the illegitimate children of an erstwhile Rajput king who are seething at their bastard status (Aditya Srivastava, Ayesha Mohan) and Anuja (Jesse), a young teacher who becomes a social misfit in college after a particular incident inflicted upon her by college hooligans. Dilip gets used as a pawn by people who matter to him and ends up being an unwilling player in a sinister plot. What it all leads to forms the rest of the film.
Bollywood gets yet another talented actor in Raj Singh Chaudhari who is also the co-writer of the film. In a film packed with great acting talents, Raj stands out with his convincing act. Kay Kay Menon as always is simply superb. Another show stealer is Deepak Dobriyal who plays his loyal assistant in the film. He speaks volumes just with his expressions without speaking much. Mahie Gill as the mujra girl cum beauty parlour owner is stunning and has tremendous screen presence. Aditya Srivastava and Ayesha Mohan are good as well. Piyush Mishra is terrific as Kay Kay’s brother and has the film’s best lines.
Gulaal was claimed as Anurag Kashyap’s angriest film and it indeed is. It explores the dynamics of royalty vis-à-vis the democratic system. Sectionalism today has set everywhere in a big way and the film is the true reflection of where our nation stands today. Though been in the making for more than four years now, never once the film gives a dated feeling. The credit for which also goes to cinematographer Rajeev Ravi. Kashyap’s dialogues that are replete with sarcastic one-liners, beautiful poetries and philosophies and also the referential meanings are amongst the finest seen on screen for a long long time in Bollywood. Piyush Mishra apart from acting superbly also scores full marks for his hard hitting lyrics and beautiful music that is mix of many interesting things such as sarcasm, peppiness, and sensibility. It is the film’s lyrics and music that make the film a completely an extraordinary experience.
Gulaal is something that is extremely relatable, especially for today’s youth. Though at a running time of over two and a half hours, there are times when the film tends to appear dragging, it is worth a watch. The film though has Anurag’s now trademark abstractness at times, it is not as incomprehensible as it was in No Smoking or in Dev.D. Go watch Gulaal. -Sampurn

i m jst out of d hall…. n it feels completely mesmerizng…experience…. being frm royal family….it felt pathetic 2 view d condition of rajasthan royal yards…. well d movie…. WAS ENOUGH APPEALNG…. 2 PLOT OUT THE REALLITY..HEADS OFF 2 ANURAG…ITS HIS ANOTHER MASTERPIECE…
Some fools are trying to pull down the movie by putting stupid comments…
The likes of Pintu and Rajeev are good for watching SRK level movies only…
film is rocking,,,,,niharika
bahot dino baad koi film achhi lagi
anurag kashyap will rock in2009.satyakam
Well as someone already said, to appreciate this movie ou need brains and have your heart in the right place and t ounderstand the lyrics and the liners (esp of Piyush, as KK’s brother) you need to understand the differences between socialism, capitalism, communalism, marxsim and how democracy differs in theroy and practiclity.
THE MOVIE : will give it 6 stars out of 5 for the thought, cinemategropgy, acting and direction. Though the plot towards the end seems a bit unconvincing the movie as an entity takes it forward. This one will leave a lasting impression. Raj comes across as a sesoned performer. His transition form being the meek post graduate aspiring law graduate to the aggresive mode is so effortless. Ransa steals the screen space in the limited scenes. for thr first time KK doesnt over shadow the stroy and everybodies performances gels into the story. KUDOS to AK for the wonderful movie. At this rate AK will have a cult following his movies.
P.S. Not being from a Hindi speaking area, didnt not undestand all the cuss words.
Phle filam dekhunga fir bataunga…. tab tak intzaar karo
seee, if i have to rate the best hindi movie ever made it would go like this
1. black friday

Very nice movie.RAJPUT BHARAT KE SABSE UNCHI JAATI HAI USE MERA SALAM.
I Like Rajput’s and matter related to them because they are vansaj of Lord Ram. They r brave, royal, warrior and protector of our Hinduism. RAJPUTO Ne sasan chor deya, brahaman ne mandiro me puja aur sara HINDUISM chopat ho gaya. KYON KAHATA HAI jatiwad khata.
evaluating the true essence of black politics. worth watching..
mind blastin movie…. hats of to anurag…
5 star movie.
A very minded very intelligent screenplay as well as story is fantastic.but second half need oxygen but climax was superb.
A INTELLIGENT MIND SHOULD WATCH IT.
POETRY WAS AN EYEOPENER
My brains stopped working after watching this movie.
Superb movie ….Must watch for youths . Bahut dino baad aisi movie aayee . anurag kashyap is excellent. Being rajput i found myself somewhere in the movie . abhi tak gussa aa raha ki ki Dileep ne us kameeni laundiya ko maraa kyon nahi …..but that is the reality ..jissey koi pyaar karta ussey kabhi goli nahi maar sakta and I think this is where anurag is different from typical bollywood directors, koi aur hota to to us kutiya ko marwaaa deta movie mein but anurag did not compromise with reality….It’s hard movie ..for real mards ………5 out of 5 stars…..
1st Half was good……disappointment will strar from 2nd half it was too much streched
Good movie, Never seen this kind of movie before. We need to have RAJPUTANA for our self, for the people of Rajputana.
India has exploited and cheat so much with the feeling of our country, now we need to stand togather and fight in the way advised in the movie.
Jai Rajasthan,
Jai Rajputna,
Jai Rajasthani
First Half is fast paced and interesting. The second half is not worth watching.
But the songs are fun to listen to.
It is said that Gulal holds similarities with a Kannada movie “Neela”. Is gulal yet another southie remake?
excellent.five star *****. anurag kashyap has a special kind of goggle to see inside human mentality.
dev d was rocking too……
Amzing Movie but Facts are just too played around with … Certain traits are like total misinterpretion and Contamination of Rajput Community.Neways its movie worth watching ….ENJOY But dont make an opinion based on same …
I found this movie quite weird. It has somehow tried to glorify (unsuccessfully) the Rajput clan. It is commonly known that the Rajputs were loyal followers of the British. There hasn’t been a since Rajput revolutionary in the fight against the British (unlike other areas like Punjab, Bengal, UP and Maharashtra). Where does the notion of this Rajput courage come from as portrayed in the movie? One shouldn’t glorify tribal conflict as some concocted notion of courage. Its quite stupid.
Anyways, coming back to the movie, the songs are truly excellent and I absolutely loved the fringe character portrayals. Good job there Anurag!
It is a good film. Not run of the mill stuff. At times film is like stretching but all in all, anurag kashyap tried to spin a story with different issues. Perhaps these issues are different today and we tried to concentrate on it in parts but looking at the larger picture he had to tell his story of political ambitions, a larger picture of politics with real characters who are fallible almost every time and who are either blinded by their political illusion as Jinnah had once or their extremely desperate search for power. And issues were spun well. Film had great actors as opposed to dramatic brainless stars and their characterization made the film all the more good. Dialogs looked real. Films serves two purposes mainly:
One is to entertain and other is to tell a story or send a message. A film which does best on either front can atleast be called good. Sometimes a run of the mill stuff may do good because of certain tweaks which make film watchable and one can half heartedly attach any message to it one like. Films falling in this category may be Ghazini. There could be films which have a story to tell and with some good stuffs make it very entertaining too. Gulal is this stuff. Shahrukh and other fans please excuse. This is not your cup of tea.
aabe ye bhi koi film hai
half star bhi nahi milna chahiye
money kharab karne wali baat hai
Will give >.5 out of 5

Your Suggestions will be welcomed.
gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
Many people undermine Raj Singh Choudhary’s performance as Dilip Singh while going all over about Abhimanyu Singh’s character Ransa. Strangely and disappointingly I didn’t see single mention of Ransa character, which is pivotal for the movie, and his protrayal by Abhimanyu Singh, one of the best character portrayal in the movie, which I think is outright unfair.
a thought-provoking artistic work.
i have just three words for it
awesome!!!
