Dev D Review

Dev D ReviewMovie Review: Dev D; Star Cast: Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and introducing Kalki Koechlin; Director: Anurag Kashyap; Rating: ** – One Big Emotional Athyachar.

Dev (Abhay Deol) is the son of a rich industrialist. He is packed off to London by his strict father who senses his growing fondness with Paro (Mahi), a girl from a less affluent family than theirs. When Dev comes back from London now as a grown up youth, his love for his childhood sweetheart is in fact much multiplied. But he is not allowed to marry her because of differences in cast and status. While Dev is sent to Delhi, Paro is married off to a rich but aged widower who has kids. Not one to take on responsibilities for his acts Dev digs deep into drugs and alcohol for salvation. He stays away from home but his finances still come from a doting father.

An escapist instinct and a massive ego leads him into an aimless search for lost love that pushes him further into an abyss of darkness and hopelessness soaked in self pity. During these times he meets a prostitute Chanda (Kalki). What follows next in Dev’s journey towards self destruction forms the rest of the plot!

Aiming it to be a modern day version of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel Devdas Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D has ended up being not everyone’s cup of entertainment. With many things more appalling than appealing, Dev D may evoke irritation and bad reaction from fans of the earlier versions and the novel. Though Kashyap gets it right by making his three principal characters (of Dev, Paro and Chanda) stronger and belonging to today’s generation, the overuse of abusive language, drugs, alcohol and sex makes him somewhere lose the point he is trying to convey. It goes onto become much darker than it should have been. Kashyap has tried to play around with his narrative style by incorporating 18 songs (some very short). But some coming one after another in succession make you really bored. He drops certain subtle laugh out moments visually and through the dialogue but they are not sufficient to keep engaged. Also, the over two and a half hour running time feels far too long than it actually should. The abrupt end may leave many perplexed.

The film somehow is salvaged to a large extent by the two leading ladies Mahi Gill and Kalki. Mahi not only looks gorgeous but is an extremely natural bringing out her rawness of her character amazingly well. Kalki is a find. She brilliantly brings out the duality of her character – her childlike innocence and her no regrets attitude about the way she lives her life. Dibyendu Bhattacharya as Chunni the brash and loud pimp succeeds is bringing out a few laughs.

Amit Trivedi’s music is good at places with Emotional Atyaachaar being already a hit. Amongst the many songs, the rock version of Emotional Atyaachaar has been superbly picturised. The camerawork by Rajiv Ravi is absolutely top class, especially when it captures the neon lit by lanes of Delhi’s Paharganj. The sound design too is good.

All in all, Dev D is one big emotional attyaachaar for all those seeking those two hours of entertainment. Those expecting lovey dovey moments please stay away. This one is only for those who wanna experience something really crazy. -Sampurn

  15. From where does this moron come? This guy hasn’t watched the movie and written a bullshit review.Paro is not married off to a widower due to caste issues as mentioned by this *******.Please watch the movie first and review it

  21. Ek baat aur family k sath bilkul mat chale jana.

  22. this reviewer is really very immature to write………………..lololol

  23. Dev.d >> emotional atyachaar suru ho gayaaaa….. mamu!!!

Excellent work with honesty from evryone who has been associated with the making of this kind of film.

a must watch film….. of course not with family.

    Dev.d rocks !!!

  24. hellota **** movie, sampurna/taran adarsh you gotta get a lil mature to understand this stuff. this is going to be the turning point for indian cinema, so guyz juss dont miss this movie. n yeah sampurna/taran adarsh betta dun give us ****!!!

  25. The trailer and the Music speak for themselves. And Anurag Kashyap isnt Karan Johar. I wonder why the reviewer fails to assimilate this simple detail. Waiy to go for Hindi Cinema!! Am yet to watch the movie. But chances are high that I would like it cos its evident from this review that it aint a ‘Typical Bollywood Movieeee!!!’. Heh.

  26. It is so sad that most of Indian Critics cannot appreciate good cinema, i am appalled and surprised by your review. I think the movie went ahead with many aspects which a regular Indian commercial movie would ever go to. I saw the movie today and it is absolutely top class, and don’t say there were 18 songs just because they released 18 tracks cos the 18 tracks don’t get to you like previous cinema, with each song being 3 mins long. The only point of view on which i would agree with you is that this movie is not meant for every1 especially the rural audience. I am sure that the producers have already kept a target audience in mind and being a UTV SpotBoy production the movie will collect its revenues from metros itself. And reading your review, it seems to me your one of those Kunal Kohili characters who end up criticizing good cinema and make their own emotional atyachaar under the YRF banner. My suggestion go for the movie but not with your parents.

  27. i watched the movie today..and i totally agree with the reviewer..what a bullshit movie it was..total watse of time and money….if i had given it rating it wud have been….(-5/10)…uff…this movie has given me the headache….

  28. It is really lousy movie and totally F**Ke* up. It is a joke if people think it is intellegent and intellectual film making.
Just adding London, BMW, Drugs and Gori ********** and her MMS
dosn’t make a great movie and oh yes some f**k*d up guys dancing in suits and ugly hats makes it worse.

  29. isse bakwaas movie dekhi nhi bhai…

  30. @Raamjaane. You should watch some *** flicks by Karan Johar. Am sure you would love them. :)

  31. such a ******* moron! stick to your ghajnis…
if this is what you think, “But he is not allowed to marry her because of differences in cast and status”– you are not fit to review a film!

  32. Tell you what , I will see the movie , even if it turns out to be a **** , I won’t regret.
Respect to Anurag and team , his dare and for the subject.
I will actually wait to see the next movie Anurag directs.

And to all those who don’t like it … bure najar wale tera mu kala…

ha ha I am so happy.

  33. the movie is good for the first 40 mmins …then till omterval its so-so..but after intervak its unbearable..what the hell they wanna show in movies…unbearable after interval…

  34. What a film !!!
Best i’v seen in a year or two.!!
No jabardasti dialoges, no fight sequence just plain great film.
    Ending could have done better.
    But still hatts off.
    4.8/5

  35. Tauba tera jalwa tauba tera pyaar tera emossional atyachaaaaaaaar……………tete teretein teretein tetetetetain ………

  36. treat 2 watch, how indian cinema is maturing. one of the finest indian movie in the recent times. dialogues, screenplay, camerawork are just fantabulous. movie is quite different(either u love it or hate it,no middle way). only shortcoming according 2 me is the overuse of *** scenes and abusing. but overall i vl give it 3.5/5.

  37. f**k u all, if u dn’t like dis movie dan u shud watch aandhi main bhe na hil saka tinka

  38. its a ******* boring movie.. one of the worst hindi movies i have seen… Take my advice dont waste ur money on this ****….Even if i had not bought the ticket for the movie I would still want my money back…

  39. First Taran Adarsh and this Sampurn….. whatever,,,, go watch the movie properly. Being a critic dosent mean u criticize everything….All who didnt like the movie were never meant to watch it coz they are jus not at that level to appreciate such movies…. Its a brilliant piece of work…. I jus loved it

  40. Why it happened in the case of every unconventional filmmaker that whenever they tried to remake their own version, they came out with the worst product of their creativity. That happens with Ramgopal Verma when he made Sholay’s modern version. This is one more nemesis product from director’s block & this time it’s from a man who gave us brilliant film-‘Black Friday’.
Welcome to the hell world of Anurag Kashyap’s modern version of classic tragedy ‘Devdas’.
It’s simply unbearable ****. The film really shocked me because I was expecting a better film from writer turned Director Anurag Kashyap & talented Abhay Deol. And what they did in the name of making a modern & unconventional version is something no audience would justify. It’s really a shameless blunder. Kashyap has made a film which is full of dark characters full of loud characterization that there’s no grace left in any of the main characters whether it’s Paro, Chandramukhi or even Devdas. It’s pure vulgar caricature of classic DEVDAS. The characters are so loud & dark that I simply can’t sympathize with any of them.
Here’s a proof- Dev is demanding a **** pic from her beloved in online chat & Paro responded the demand with her mobile camera, get it’s hard copy from lewd eye studio wala & scanned it again from market place. (Which Indian modern beloved will do this for his lover???) Dev watched the pic online on his mailbox & next he returned to India from abroad & he’s meeting his dearest beloved Paro after a long gap. What is the 1st thing he wanted to do with Paro is having ***. Is this healthy version??? In Kashyap’s version of Devdas-LOVE = ***.
The whole movie watching experience is so horrible & disturbing one. It seems that director was also impressed by Aronofsky’s brilliant dark tragedy- ‘Requiem for a dream’ & so you will see lot of hip hop cuts, extreme close ups & all sorts of junk dirt in the name of portraying a dark modern tragedy- Drugs, ***, Alcohol, Smoking, mobile chat ***, MMS scandal, Porn filming, hit & run everything available in the latest news to make it more & more dark but nothing works to highlight the audience focus.
The film becomes so unbearable in the climax that I would literally like to shout loudly.
Anurag, you can’t sort out all the scum & dirt & ugly reality in the name of making modern unconventional version of classic Indian tragedy…yeah, I’ve also read Kafka from whose inspiration you made nice attempt- ‘No Smoking’. I do love sincere unconventional efforts of directors to uplift the Hindi films but this is just absolute nonsense.

There are two new Hindi films releasing today & I’m sure that the other Govinda starrer ‘Chal Chala Chal’ will be surely far better entertaining one than this so called modern ****.

One of the worst remake version I ever seen.
    Strongly avoid this ‘Emotional Atyaachaar.’

    Ratings- 2/10
P.S.- 1 point for Abhay Deol’s daring to do such a character & 1 for the Music compositions of new talent Amit Trivedi.

  41. @ HIREN
You have to stop being a prude.. atleast some director had the guts to showcase the world for wht it is.. i’m sorry sir but drugs, *** and alcohol are as real as they get even in India today. The characters of Paro, Chanda and Dev… ***-obsessed youngsters.. are very real.. they may seem overrated thanks to out very “conservative” society.. but people like this do exist. I can see a Chanda like school girl in the school’s today as well as Paro who’s a rural girl screaming out to explore her sexuality. Just coz u cover it up with a dupatta it doesn’t become any less “indecent”

i think anurag kashyap has finally done justice to sarat chandra’s story.. he’s shown devdas for wht he really was .. a self obsessed selfish loser who couldn’t care less for anything but himself.. who wallowed in self pity simply because he wanted to.. he was angry at himself the most.. which so far only DevD has been able to bring out. The use of colour, lighting and grafiti art directiong and cinematography is awesome in this movie. Dev D in many ways is a musical.. if u observe there aren’t tht many dialogues.. infact Chanda’s entire past as Leni and the MMS scandal are in 3 songs.. and u dont even realise tht there are songs.. i mean they fit so well.. it’s not boring song sequences with far shots, close shots or a dance around trees! even the only song tht has a dance sequence pardesi.. is as different as they come!
I think Dev D is superior cinema…it’s the best film i’ve seen in the recent years.. it is rated adult and as adult watchers.. we should be open to abusive lanuage and sexual references.. if we aren’t then we should stick to the U/A rated films! I think Dev D is A MUST WATCH for everyone who appreciates cinema.

    rating – 5/5.

  42. Pulp Fiction at its best.

  43. these guys can only review rab ne…type of movies.****** alert!!! after seeing the promos if he expected a mushy movie…then who is the fool

  49. still waitin to watch it

  50. all the guys who think anurag is a revolutionary filmmaker etc etc and has the courage to do something like this are quite naive about the real people in the industry who have done this for the last fifty years.

there have been many people in indian cinema regional and bollywood who are the real revolutionaries.

for a guy like anurag who is written dhan dhana dhan goal and kaante and for the same guy to be a revolutionary is quite contradicting , its like a guy who says he loves animals but is ameat eater .

so grow up guys about this revolutionary bull ****.

emotional atyachar is copy of of a song made in the 80’s .
why dont you use your computer skills and find out where it was copied . now that was revolutionary. instead of just mouthing **** without checking .
so much for it being a great song . i suggest all you nitwits or the so called younger generation get your facts right .

anurag is dvd filmmaker who gets inspired by dvd’s check his blogs to verify that.

as far as DEV D goes , its pretentious , lacks emotional content , soul , its just like an ad film just well shot and some strange music which the younger generation mistakes for a good film and compares it with tarantino and darren arronosky. how bizarre and trite .
anurag is a mediocre film maker and a good scene writer . thats all.

more later . watch this space

  51. A brilliant film with 2 much **** scenes.top class music and acting.4/5

  52. HEY Sampurn,
KIS WAJAH SE TUMKO FILM CRITIC KARNE DETE HE?
ARE KOI ACHCHI FILM KO AISE MAGATIVE STAR MAT DO MERE BHAI?
FILM DEKHI HE YA AISE HI STAR DE DIYE HE?
YE FILM ME KISI STAR NE WORK NAHI KIYA HE PAR ISME 1 ACTOR NE KAM KIYA HE.
EVERONE SAY IS THE AMAZING MOVIE…
I THINK Sampurn U MUCT LEAVE THIS POST//
I DONT THINK THAT U KNOW ANY THINK ABOUT WAT IT MOVIE?

FORGET IT FRNDS DEV D IS REALLY A SUPERB MOVIE..
BUT I HAVE TO SAY ITS DIFFICULT TO SEE WITH PARENTS BUT HIS MAKING IS AWSEME..
ABHAY DEOL IS REALLY A NOT STAR BUT HE IS REALLY A FANTASTIC ACTOR. HIS ALL MOVIE IS AMAZING BUT SOME CRIRIC MEMBER IS SPOILING HIM. HIS ALL MOVIE LIKE SOCHA NATHA, AHISTA AHISTA, MANORAMA. EK 40 KI LAST LOCAL, OYE LUCKY ALL THIS MOVIE R 2 APPRECIATE..U CANT GET BORE IN HIS EVERY MOVIE…
    ABHAY U R REALLY A GOOD ACTOR.
SO PLS GUYS WATCH IT IF WANNA REALLY SOMETHING NEW IN MOVIE.

  53. honesty at its epitomy……very much practical….u can absolutely relate it with reality and you will find it difficult to pinpoint loopholes…although i wud say its perfect for da indian audience….at the end of the day every director wants appropriate box office collections….creatively very fresh and innovative and no matter how bad you want it….every individual wants to be happy in the end….in this case it does not have to be always a fitting end rather a perfect 1 is always nice ..optimism is never bad…..personally speaking i really loved da editing ,indirect statements, facial non verbal expressions and also da hidden messeges targeted 4 audience or rather particular audience who will again want to watch it……camera work at times was mesmerizing…(i think it was rolling still camera work which really captured da experience and mood of the scenes) i felt dat as apart of the audience i was told the story in a very resplendent way…..da location of da first shot wid da kids and da shot were Abhay Deol is wid the Sikh reminded me of Ritwik Ghatak in Meghe Dhaka Tara….same place same person in different situations and different incident occurences…i can just go on writing about dis movie….if u want to be entertained but have a different experience of watching a movie…well atleast in the bollywood industry….then go 4 it…..great work….hope ppl start appreciating movies like this…because total honesty along with a touch of creativity and innovativeness should be embraced and appreciated…….may be “New Wave” cinema is coming to India now….hope dat we’ll have our own Godard Antonioni and Bergman in the modern era of cinema in India…well lot of knowledgable people wud say that it is impossible….not in India with all these producers around…but whats wrong in being optimistic….(morale)

  54. wat the hell dude u need to check ur mind
or may be u have that in ur leg man seriously
u dont have ne sense of rating ne thing my fault to see ur rating but may be after this dosssse u will learn something buddy
o atlist go n check ur mind
    for me its nothing but * * * * *
    no doubt

  55. This is a film tfor the those ’so-manly-oh-boy’ people is it? Why because you’ve smoked pot sometime in your life and you REALLY F*CKING feel CLOSE to DEV sir is it?

MY ‘cool-and-non-sissy’ people, just because some guy thinks making India’s own Trainspotting doent mean **** will SELL.

    It IS a good film.
But Mr. Kashyap is so lost in his OWN trip that this DOESN’T NEED TO BE CALLED DEV.D AT ALL. Hell, I would like it maybe better if it wasn’t called Dev.D.

AND YES, for a critic who wanted to write a review that DOESN’T only praise the film to your taste, you have to agree the guy above has done a good job.

  56. gr8888888 muvi…after a long time… a refreshing one …. xcelnt work, gr8 acting.. awsm music.. many lessons frm d mvi… wat else u wnt… truly deserves 5* .. a must watch… pardesi song is gr8 nd beautifully picturised … dont miss

  57. saale ghajini jaise jhatu movies ko 4 star detey ho ..this movie deserve 5 star

  58. movie is well picturised… acting is very good… only draw back i feel its a bit lengthy.. best song picturisation ever… movie deserves 4 stars…

  59. movie is really awsome..
its one of its own types in bollywood..
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1327035/
even imbd gave it 9.3 rating..
    A must watch..

  60. I still havent watched d muvi bt one thng is for sure that the box office perfomance of the muv lies in our hand guies. Bcoz we all knw whenver such kind offbeat films come due to lack of huge star-cast it either is critically acclamed or bcmz flop. So go guies and watch at least 1 time. Bcoz next friday releasz r bilu & dili.B-)

  61. Amazing, Amazing movie. Definitely the coming of age for Indian cinema. Mr/Ms reviewer, pelase stick to typical bollywood fare. From my side – 5 stars

  62. ” But he is not allowed to marry her because of differences in cast and status.”

    I missed this part..

You didn;t even see the movie.

  63. finally after 11 years of “satya” i can give 5 stars to a movie . a movie so great that it simplly blows ur heads off. every character is grey. no one is moral and every body is a victim of circumstances.
the film is the pinnnacle of movie making.
the sheer audacity, rawness, and unrealistically realistic treatment creates magic on screen.
and believe me just watching one time is not gud enough.
    songs are unbeliveable as well.
the characers of paro and chanda are so well written that before dev falls in love with them; u will fall in love with them.
and both the ladies have done a remarkable job.
mahi gill looks so elegant and an epitome of feminity.
kalki has an amzing screen presence. with her earthy and next door girl looks, she will win ur heart and her school girl senuality is uncomparable.
anurag is THE BEST director in this country and with a girlfriend like kalki he is a lucky ******* as well.
and now we come to the real reason of watching the movie. abhay deol.
he has become a cult figure for a lot of his fans. the concept is his and he has completely overshadowed any other devdas that ever was.
from now on if anybody will be remembered as devdas, he will be abhay.
after 7 movies he has overshadowed many heavyweights in the industry.
he looks so natural and confident on screen.
and how chilled this guy is can be judged from the fact that at the time of his biggest ever release he is rite now in new york for a welding course.

  64. its a fattte movie. dont miisss it guys. ye reviewer to chutiya hai.. kuch aata jata nahi saale ko… this film is …………………………………………………….. i hav no wrds .

  65. Who is this Taran Adarsh? Has he seen the movie? I think he is one of the Ram Sena members and hence wants to degrade this movie. I think you need to quit art review and join the bjp. Who gave you this job I wonder!

  66. im sure u guys like to watch a bigtime loser’s life story.
i told the same to devdas and same here for deb.d.
i rate it 2/5 ,1 for cinematography and 1 for music.

may be some ppl feel its awesome ,but reviewer needs to keep all kinds viewers in mind before rating.

more than movie times of india rating sucks.

  67. its a superb movi 5/5

  68. movie is all time greate and we dont depend on your review its a class like tare zameen par or satya
i give 5/5 after seen movie

  69. Excellent movie!! Finally seems like bollywood is really changing…surely not meant for people who like chick flicks, people who want to hide from some tough realities of life…movie is sad..it is dark..not of the so called ‘entertainment value’ but is definitely quite high on artistic content…

  70. Seriously guys, this movie does not deserve a 5 star rating at all as given by Times of India. What the heck, if I remember correctly, Titanic as well The dark Knight was given 4 n half stars ratings. Now u telling me that, DEV D is even better than these Super duper block buster movies…No way dude..

I have seen the movie and I think I am the LOSER here for seeing the whole movie till the end..I was on the edge of my seat, not that the movie was that interesting, it made me feel like puking just like the protagonist on the screen who was doing the puking most of the time.

guys who have not seen this movie>> A WARNING FOR U…DONT SEE THE MOVIE…else if u r that bold-hearted i suggest u take a pillow at least and an air sickness bag with u at least to the movie hall..

  71. whoever wrote the review hasnt watched the movie closely…he was probably wondering why the guy at the counter has given him carmel popcorn when he had specifically asked for cheese flavour…
or probably lost the thread while watching couplesmake out in the dark
Dev lost Paro because of his own misjudgement and he was sent to UK not beacuse his father sensed “his growing fondness with Paro” but to mend his wayward behavior…
    watch the movie carefully dude..

  72. Firstly, somebody should fire this Sampurn s**t.

If everybody on earth thinks they can review or criticize on highly intense form of art, then all of them would have been some form of artists. Even the Class-5 students of SRK’s ‘Pachwi Paas’ program can review ‘Rab ne ban di Jodi’. But it needs serious knowledge and intellectual depth to even think about criticizing this movie.

This is like eastern classical music. Just because somebody doesn’t understand that form of music, doesn’t mean you can criticize it and claim it’s not good enough.

I think this is the MOST CREATIVE hindi movie ever created in Bollywood. Hats Off to the whole team.

    5 out of 5

  73. I think this movie is a total waste of money and time…My rating is -5/5. do not go plz

  74. abey movie dekha bhi tha thik se, ya hot scenes n dialogue se hi khus ho gya tha .. kuch likhne se pehle dekh to liya kaar thik se .. those who r looking for sumthin different (I’m not sayin good or bad), and bored with goody girls like Kalpana in Ghajini must watch ………

  75. Sampurn U r the biggest ******* I hav ever seen, aap plz wohi kare, jo bus mein likkha hua tha,(I think u noticed those details b4 writing a review)

  76. Miles ahead of likes of Rab ne bana di jodi, Ghajini and similiar frustratingly emotional movies. Gosh, I was killing myself for even seeing Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi for its ridiculously emotional content as if we are living in a world where one cries like a baby for no apparent reason. Fathom this – “use mujhse aise hi pyar karna padega” from RNBDJ and SRK cries tub out. I was scratching my head.

This movie is quite different and rightly said our own indian “Pulp fiction”. Most of the people who are not going to give it thumbs up are those habitual of crying when they dont get a toy. Entertainment through depicting fiction is one thing but trying to get tearjerker just because hero doesnt gets his heroine to appreciate is just aweful.

Amazingly near to the real world and amazing direction. So what he stole some tidbits from other films and so what he eats meat. In earlier replies what a funny hypothesis. “Anurag is not a good director because he eats meat” ha ha . I am rolling on the floors for this guy is a moron.

All the characters of original plot with original intent of depicting the sexual angle of the story were grasped well by anurag. Abhay Deol gives a riveting performance alongside Kalki and Mahi. So good I am still feeling that good tug in my belly. After so long a good cinema. Hats off to anurag to have pulled this one through quite convincingly. five out of five for him

  78. Reviewer is the Biggest a*****e i have read ever. Through Promos Abhay Deol looks so natural It must have rocked in movie.

  79. Hey mr. reviewer find a better job cos u really dont know how to rate good movies…. This movie worth 4 stars. The acting is natural and screen play is good. Its an art to judge a movie not every fool can do it… your review is a “big emotional attyachar”

  80. senorita,
bade bade sheroon mein aise choti choti baten hoti rehti…. but the ******* who has written this review has either not watched the movie or perhaps a bit late for the shah rukh khan starrer… DEVDAS…. now what u should do with that *** is ur baby but fraking buy a ticket and watch the movie……

  81. we sent it twice coz few crucial words were being **********

  82. I was surprised to read the review. The story is all wrong. The reviewer doesn’t seem to have watched the movie. Anyways, critics don’t decide the fate of a movie, it’s the audience that rules. Dev D type movies (modern remakes of classic novels) are nothing new in world cinema but this seems to be the first of its kind in Bollywood. Hard to say whether it will set a trend or not. I personally call such movies ‘MTV style’. You watch them with awe and enjoy every moment, and somewhat like junk food, it just goes away. What remains is how you felt while watching it. Whether Dev D is remembered in the long run or not, “Emossional Atyachaar” is going to stay forever.

  83. The person who has reviewed the movie DEV D has no knowledge of a good cinema……..what these want is a ****** Akshay Kumar comedy in which one has to leave their minds in home bvefore watchin it……..

What i really want to say is dat DEV D …for me. is d movie of the year……great story, great muzic,n not to forget Abhay’s mind blowin performance……..Abhay bhai…u hav added one more fan in ur account n continued good performance after Manorma n Oye Lucky……….WELL DONE>>>>>>>

  84. abe madarchod….sampurn…movie bhe dekha ha madarchod???…jo kuch bhi likh raha hai…..abe nahin aata hai toh mere paas aa……lauda chuswayenge aur likhwanege….harami ka pilla sala…..

  85. zhakaaaaaaaaaaas movie

  86. Hi guys, I **** in England and ardent fan of our movies, I came across this site for the first time. I am so impressed and not surprised that people appreciate this type of movie, i absolutely enjoyed the movie. Sampurn **** should improve his understanding of movies.

  87. After watchin Dev d u will be in Short term memory Loss .Pathetic movie in history

  88. Well duh!! ur illiterate.. maybe u jus don understand hindi and english.. u haven got head or foot of d story rite!!!! dis site needs to kick this reporter out!!!! it wasn’t d best movie… but uv got d facts wrong!!! n d movie half aint bad as u say! wat were u doin durin d movie??? drugs, *** perhaps…!!!

  89. Well duh!! ur illiterate.. maybe u jus don understand hindi and english.. u haven got head or foot of d story rite!!!! dis site needs to kick this reporter out!!!! it wasn’t d best movie… but uv got d facts wrong!!! n d movie half aint bad as u say! wat were u doin durin d movie??? drugs, *** perhaps…!!!

    Its a great movie……….

  90. hey sampurna why dont you something else than writing the review of the film, u ***** have you seen that movie or just seen the postars..go get out of here and dont even write again..u raskal…were u drunk and seeing the movie..

this is one of the best movie but nt with family

  91. Helloooooo Sampurn! Have you even watched this movie? Your review is that of a moron honestly. Dev D is a brilliant movie and Anurag Kashyap just kicked ***. It’s a brilliant presentation and you need a basic level of intelligence to understand it and to appreciate it as well… so maybe you should stick to reviewing movies which are more your calibre! Don’t smear your ignorance over an awesome movie!

  92. cool canadian cool………we know how the movie is……..forgive SAMPURN…..poor site…..

  93. stupid movie

  94. One of the best review of the film is on the above link, and not quite stupid movie as this review points, though people are harking useless praise too on the film. Ram

  95. ha ha..were you high on something..o did u see Dev D at all..when is there a scene where the actor is not allowed to marry ‘coz of caste differences..its amusing that your farcical review is even put up..the movie is for people who can accept it in their face..Its all happenin..cant a woman have feelings, to hell with the emotional ones, evn woman explore their sexuality. All those who dislike the ones who want to do everything behind closed doors.

Its in your face, there is just nothing wrong with the movie, In fact, it is one brilliant piece of work, contemporary cinema that mirrors reality and there is nothing wrong with it.

I don’t even want to waste my time behind this so-called critic..gees.just that the movie is a benchmark, so jus stop reinforcing your sick ideology on others and get a life!

  96. a word to those morons who, for paranormal reasons, found Dev D boring, attyachar, f**ked up story etc….
First and foremost, Anurag kashyap deserves a standing ovations for his efforts. This film has a xtremely witty, sensible and realistic plot mostly derived from the true to life incidents which have taken place.
The actors portraying the characters(mind u,each of them very well sketched) were clearly picked based on their compatibility with the narration.
abhay, kalki, mahie, dibyendu and others have put forward sterling performances… i couldn’t imagine anyone else in their shoes.
techniques used groundbreaking yet flawless… imagination and creative abilities is what this film has no dearth of.
Amit Trivedi: His compilation of music of various genres is truly the work of a genius… all 18 tracks were composed catering to various situations in the film and characters the were picturised on…Each of the tracks have a distinct identity of their own.
anurag’ s vision and his cameraman have put together really splendid visuals…….
all said and done, regardless of what some YRF,KJo,Farah khan-generated bullshit fed moviegoers have to say, DevD deserves the status of an urban classic our film industry.
(A word to our khans and roshans: instead of flaunting ur six(maybe eight) pack abs our goin gaga over ur newcomer heroine
try sticking to original and sensible storyline and belting out riveting performances perhaps taking cue from Abhay Deol!!!)

  97. and as for sampurn…
its high time apply for voluntary retirement.
if only i could shoot you online…..
your review bares everything about your feeble, sick tastes for cinema

  98. I would suggest to this company – realbollywood.com or whatever it is, to fire this Stupid Reviewer immediately. Or may be this company just wanted some hits on this page, hence setup a useless review without even watching the movie!!!

    PeACe,
    Aaaaahhh

  99. i think the reviewer just saw the trailer n has gone by hearsay……..father of dev clearly says at one point that he wanted dev to marry paro but he cant understand what sort of girl he likes after coming from london…………such people shud not be allowed to review………

  100. ek star ka oukad nahi haiu…dev-d…. but d song emotional atyachaar is paisa vasool

  101. I am not agree with the reviewer, Dev D Beautifully plooted and executed by Anurag Kashyap.

I love the work and movie too……

Great work Mr. Anurag Kashyap KEEP IT UP……………..

  102. dev d ko 5 se kam star nahi milne chahiye aur jo nahi de uski maa chod do

  103. This reviewer should be asked to stay away from movies like Dev-D because they refuse to grow up and are not ready for anything new. Please keep your reviews limited to movies like Rab ne bana di… and all those mushy movies…
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM MOVIES LIKE THESE ..you clearly have no brains to understand and appreciate Dev-D…

don’t insult the movie by doing such things….you are not worth writing a review fr this movie…
    The movie was awesome..

  104. This is must watch cinema.. a landmark of sorts.. for visuals, screenplay, music…

    very refreshing, very in tune.

  105. This is the best movie i have seen in the recent past, including foreign cinema. I am very happy to the fact that indian cinema is maturing and will be able to compete with international cinema. I feel the reviewer here is not exposed to real facts of indian people and world cinema. india is a diverse country with people of varying tastes, some may not like it, but while reviewing a movie, it is the moral responsibility of the reviewer, to write it properly, if he/she cannot understand it, its better not to write anything. …………. Hearty thanks to Director Anurag Kashyap and rest of the people who made this movie.

Finally one of the best movie from indian cinema. A must watch movie. I rate it as 5 out of 5

  106. There are very few movies that I watch on the day of their release and DEV.D was one of them.I was waiting for it for the past 2 months.I just knew I had to see it the moment I saw breathtaking visuals(The snorricam shots inspired from classic Requiem for a Dream) in the trailer itself. The fact that the movie was directed by Mr. Maverick made me even more excited. So now when I have seen the movie I am absolutely satisfied because I got what I expected.

This movie is all about your sense of perception of Art.If you find charm in innovative screenplay, extraordinary photography, symbolic scenes and realistic acting you gotta love this cinematic masterpiece. But if you want to see an entertainer which is going to generate emotions, unfortunately its not for you.All those who find the story unrealistic must understand its not the portrayal of what happens in love but the most beautiful depiction of whats going through one’s mind when one gets/doesn’t get love. So, either you will crave for the movie to go on for few more hours or wait for it to end.

Coming to the real content of the movie, the story line which is based on Devdas has its own twists and you better not expect the expected.Abhay Deol is absolutely fantastic. There is not a single scene where you can doubt the authenticity of the character he is playing. Both the new girls are equally good. Mahie Gill(Paro)deserves all the applause for doing many a tough scenes with calming ease.Kalki(Chanda)is really cute and has given a mature performance.

I just fell in love with the movie and wanted to see more of the unpredictable series of events through extraordinary musical narration. The only thing which I missed in Dev.D was a bit of soul but I guess It was meant to be the way it is.

  107. Superub…. worth watching….

  108. WHAT A MOVIE MAN

  109. aaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiila
    ye to meri movie he……..!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11hgkdhgndnvdndhodvnjnv

  110. “This one is only for those who wanna experience something really crazy.”
    how true is this line….!!
but sorry….in ur whole article only this line was true….lolzzzz!!!!
it was a really gud cinema man.u kno wat indians are wanting 2day in the bollywood movie.just that the movies shud hv sumthin different in them..and this 1 was totally different from others.it was one of the best movies ever made in bollywood…yes ever.u kno how much rating is given by the newspaper times of india 2 this movie??….it was *****.yes 5 stars out of 5…..now u only think….’times of india’ the best newspaper of india and 1 of the strict raters of movies who gave slumdog 4.5,taare zameen parr 4.5 etc….gave 5 to dev d…..how can u give it just 2 stars????….and yes to ur words ‘emotional attyachar’….i can tell u dear – was srk’s devdas was not ‘emotional atyachar’??????????????
    think about it….
sorry if u r hurt by this sampurn….but still this is the truth….!!!!
    thnx

  111. lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  112. after reading this review i felt like oh god ! what did i read….what a piece of a*s he has written …..oh **** ……..the review sucks

  113. anurag has done it again.
his style of narration is just superb.
    a real great job.
its not a devdas. its a movie narrating the story of today…how *** and drugs are crawling up in our society and….in our homes.
    a brilliant cinematography.
the camering is just left me spellbound.
anurag is the most intelligent director of recent times. so how can you expect DEV D to be a bogus masala flim. Abhay deol has done very good job. Mahi gill is also awsome in some moments but seems to be a bit classic and old in some scenes.
one of the most entertaining parts is the sets.
the sets used inthe flim are made job easier and put a better darkness in it.
the sound score is very good.
specially nayan tarse, payallia, emosional atyachhar made the scenes greater to watch.
the chanda thing really worked out so well.

    my rating 9/10

  114. So I saw Dev D and yawn yawn, people exaggerate so much!
From no angle did the movie deserve the five stars bestowed upon it by some sad-desperate movie critic.

The subject matter is just a mish-mash of themes not properly covered. What are you trying to say Mr. Kashyap? Drugs, abuse and alcohol are okay, you’ll eventually find your way! The second half of the movie drags on and repetitions of the same idea are the true emotional attyachaar on the viewer. The ending was much to abrupt and seemed like an effort to redeem the dark nature persisting throughout the movie, but failed miserabley. Yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but what struck me the most about the movie was that there was no repentance in the character. As if all you need is to wake up in the morning and decide, I’m a good person now. It does not happen that way. While it seems natural that this would appeal to the current youth seeing that they want acceptance that they can abuse their body and minds all they want and get away with it without repenting, a truly brilliant movie would have addressed this issue. While in SRK’s Devdas, the journey of the character is shown as he tries to win back his love and this egomaniacal Dev would never have the courage to do so. So yes, preach away Mr. Kashyap, that you do not have to be saint, but then your movie, remains just that, a movie, and not a work of brilliant art. Abhay’s character is too self-centered but despite that it has been underplayed, with no real connection, and not even once does this viewer find that tears are close to being shed. Today’s generation can relate to substance abuse, but the depth of the journey was only partly covered. A more wholistic approach would have scored more points and speeded up the dull second half.

  115. I watched the movie..the movie made me realise that we have people like anurag who can deliver in such a fashion..really felt proud of bollywood..and actors like abhay..freak..he’s a natural talented actor..he executes every scene from slapping paro..calling her a ****..to crying at his father’s funeral..He’s just impressive..Kudos Abhay..I never was sure about your acting..even after oye lucky..lucky oye..but with this movie..I’m flattered as an audian..YOU ROCK!!! DEV D Team …Fantastic work..wish to see more of such creative spills happening from this team..Cheers!!

  116. the reviewer is a kiddo !! he sucks byg tym !

  117. A big step in Indian cinema.. those who dint like it shud broaden their minds n stop behavin like over aged women… awesome flick!!!

  118. Mediocre movie… nt a huge leap forward for indian film industry but worth a thought. But one thing for sure, my respect for Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Deol has increased after watching the film. One additional thing, this reviewer completely sucks. What does he expect in this 21st century? A ****** ‘devdas’ dying under a tree??

    Allover, the making was JOSSSS…

  119. I downloaded the torrent to watch it and I feel bad. So I bought it online. This is a coming of age movie. A guy like me who forwards song sequences (usually shot in Swiss Alps / Egypt / Valhalla for all I care that has nothing to do with the movie), I found myself learning more about the story through songs. Abhay Deol came out with the concept (see credits). Applause my man. Who are Mahi and Kalki? How did one find them? Great actors. They fit the role very convincingly. The material is modern, and many may not identify with it. Being an ‘83 born and being very metro-influenced, I too find the material very fast. But this is the truth in many lives. How long are going to be ignorant? Are you waiting for a time to find your daughters in an MMS? Face the fact. Face the new life. Understand different emotions. The movie is very contemporary and educational about today’s teenager’s life. Thanks Anurag Kashyap. I will pay to watch any of your future movies. Go on to make more to open people’s eyes. Thank you and thanks to a majority who have accepted this movie.

  120. amazing movie,i dont give a **** about other people, who are used to watch srk junk senti movies(about 70% of indian population eventually). This movie rocks

  121. its a nice movie. the review writer has screwed up in first para itself. what he has written is the original version’s ****. in this movie there are no issues of caste and social status diff. its a misunderstanding on the part of Dev D and he rejects Paro and not his father (who infact wants Paro as their bahu – a stark diff from the original **** srk-version).

Overall a Fun Movie. It really rocks and makes a good parody out of the original SRK version which was an Emosanal Atyaachar. This one infact revs u up Emosanaly and shows u what u should do if u land in Dev D type situation.

A Must See for those who like off beat movies.

  122. i thought these were supposed to be reviews by pro’s

  123. this movie was just wannabe. trying to show that bollywood is all grown up nonsense. watch y tu mama tambien if you want to watch some real, unpretentious cinema. or sorry bhai if you are the other kind of stuck up snob who doesnt watch phoren films

  124. The first 40 minutes was interesting and then the flow went down the drain with horrific narrations. Gory scenes and both heroine’s roles will definitely put you off. The only saving grace is the screen play and music. My rating 2/5.

  125. indian cinema very slow but one step towards revoloutionary cinema

  126. its a total time waste…the review is really true….actually such kinda movies are a shame to bollywood and are not less than a blue film!!….aur log bhi pagal hain
chak de india itni acchi nahin lagegi, taare zameen par itni acchi nahin lagegei jitni acchi dev d lagegi!!…indians are really morons, hungry for porn movies!!!

  127. a shame towards bolloywood!!

  128. Really good music by Amit Trivedi. Versatile. Unmatchable.
    Movie is good too.

  129. 4.5/5 for music.
    great work by Amit Trivedi.

  130. Wat a movie
    100/5!!!!!!!!!!

  131. for all those ******* ******** on this post who say that this movie was good!! even after seeing the reviews….just cut your ***** and go to hell.

such a blatant and unrealistic display shows the class of the director and people who say this is a good movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!commom lols, dumbos, seems this is what indian society u have seen!!!!!!!!!!!!..u people have not even understood the movie…*******..if the climax does not give u any signal

  132. vd-s raising fingers on director or actor is meaningless, they will do what they can at best. But people who should review the move properly… just understand if this is what u want to showcase for indian men !!! junk mentality.

  133. raw display never makes sense………..not a question of sentimental ga ga. even this can be thought to be a sentimental ****.

  134. those who like this just go and read and learn about classy movies..***** praises!

  135. reviews are given my people with overall shaped thoughts not a retarded 3 year old mind or a sexborne mind! and just supplement bad art by saying that it was advertised so and is practical!!. seems those people who said so do this only!! and should go and lick director’s ***.

  136. Who is this motherfucker who wrote the review?

  137. hey i saw the movie yesterday..i found it vry good..the one who wrote review is jst ******* coz critics have gven dis movie 5 out of 5…lolz..if u don believe chck out
    http://timesofindia.**********.com/moviereview/4082878.cms

  138. the reviewer is a liar, he has not seen the movie, i think he based his review on trailers & some reactions of other people who saw the movie…

dev does not marry paro because he didnt want to thinking she cheated on him, infact his father liked paro and wanted her to be his daughter in law, and he does not send dev to london because of his love for paro (do not know which movie the reviewer saw), but because of his mischievous behavior…

i think either way the movie is too deep for such people who might rate rab ne banadi jodi higher

  139. This movie was fabulous. The reviewer definitely does not know what he is talking about. I think this movie should win best movie of the year and Abhay best actor. I have never appreciated any other actor as much as Abhay in my entire life. I love Hrithik and SRK but they too wouldn’t be able to play this role as well as Abhay did. It was a very well made movie. I could watch it again and again. It shows so much reality nowadays. Anytime Bollywood chooses to show reality or even Boyle for Slumdog some people in India do not appreciate it. It’s reality, this is life. Stop ignoring it!!

This movie is a 10/10 for me! Definitely not for kids.

  140. i loved it..

  141. Comeon now.Indian cinema has matured finally and you guys give such a sh**ty review to a fine piece of wopk like this? That is absolutely ridiculuous!!!!!!!!I’ll give it 4-4.5 stars on 5.Marks deducted only for a messy ending………

  142. ******… Watch the movie with your eyes and ears open before even attmpting to apply the disaster that is your brain into writing a piece of **** that is your review… Dev’s father very clearly states on the day of Paro’s marriage that he wanted him to marry Paro but he has Firangi tastes.. Prefers Vodka over Whisky… Watch the movie Dumbfuck before you write…

The movie openly states that it has moved away from traditional interpretation of Devdas when on his return from London his father asks to burn the traditional had that Devdas has asorned in previous versions…

You are right, this film is not for eveyone, especially for orthodox, dimwitted, narrow minded, culture preaching **** bags such as yourself… If your employers have any brains, you should be ot of the job soon…

  143. This is a review? WTF?? oh of course.. this reviewer would give dev d 2 and any stupid yash raj movie a 5.. all in all, dev d was the best movie of 2009 hands down.. and i agree with DBan dev d is the way to remake classics.. because of ppl like this reviewer, the indian movie industry doesnt prosper.. watch the movie without bribes from other film makers and then give a review.
