Billu Barber Review
Movie Review: Billu Barber; Star Cast: Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh Khan; Director: Priyadarshan; Rating: *** – Touches your heart.
Billu is a story of a down to earth village barber, Billu (Irfaan Khan). A man of principles, he is not willing to give up his values come what may even if it means his children are thrown out of the school or his earnings taking a beating. While his wife (Lara) understands him and stands by him during his tough times, his children forever make fun of him. As Billu is struggling making two ends meet, a film unit visits his village to shoot a movie and with the unit comes superstar Sahir Khan (SRK) Billu’s childhood buddy. When the news comes out about Billu’s childhood connection with Sahir Khan, the villagers make a U-Turn in their behaviour towards Billu. He suddenly starts getting respect from one and all. But at the same time everyone starts coaxing him to meet the superstar, all for their own benefits. But then whenever Billu tries, he fails in his many attempts thanks to Sahir’s Z category security. With this the villagers start getting more restless and an already in trouble Billu has to face their additional wrath. What it all leads to forms rest of the film.
Based on Malayalam super hit Katha Parayumbol starring Mammootty, Billu’s basic story premise is based on the legendary Krishna-Sudama friendship story. But full marks to Priyadarshan for adapting it well to a present day North Indian village setting. The maker who has always been more associated with mindless comedies shows he knows his job well when handling a serious subject as well. Priyan has handled his huge lot of characters very well and brought out humour from the most unexpected situations. He is technically brilliant as usual but where he scores the most, is in lending a soul to the film. There isn’t a single dry eye in the cinema hall during the climax scene between Irrfan and SRK and also during SRK’s public speech scene. Priyan has packed in the emotions extremely well. Where he falters is the pacing. A better editing was desperately needed. Though the second half is where the actual story unfolds, it appears very lengthy and the item songs added, end up testing your patience. Pritam’s music appears better on screen with songs being innovatively picturised, especially the SRK-Deepika’s Love Mera Hit number.
Talking about the performances, Billu is more of an Irrfan Khan film than a King Khan one. He is simply superb and natural to the core. Shah Rukh is good as always but proves with the climax scene why he deserves to be called a superstar. Lara Dutta despite having a glam doll image has perfectly suited the part of a village woman with two kids. Apart from them, the film is full of Priyadarshan film regulars – Rajpal Yadav, Asrani, Manoj Joshi and Rasika Joshi and they don’t disappoint either. Om Puri as the greedy sweet talking money lender is fun to watch. Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone add glam quotient by featuring in three item songs of sorts.
Don’t go in expecting a full on SRK flick and you won’t come out disappointed. Billu has a good story to tell and is the kind of a film that brings a tear in your eye and at the same time a smile on your lips as you come out of the hall.

bakwasss… downfall of shahrukh has begun. how cud a clas actor like irfan agree to work in such a stupid movie.
it is a good movie because
1. it has a simple, but strong story line which is so so rare in bollywood arena. (thanks to the malayalam film industry which seems to be an endless treasure of strong subjects)
2. a good story neatly told
3. good casting- the tamil version bombed because of the name “Rajanikanth” was something else to the fans… it was not his cup of tea
4. Irfan Khan- sound performance, equal to the task and does justice to his malayalam counterpart.
5. last twenty minutes- really gives something to think
6. good hearted humor that flowers forth from unexpected situations
7. shahrukh khan- his performance in the last half an hour justifies his decision to go on with the movie despite the fact that the tamil version was a disaster.
8. good performance by the usual Priyadarshan crew including Om Puri and Rajpal Yadav.
9. nice work done by Sabu Cyril
10. good songs which are nicely taken.
it is not a film that force you to leave your brain outside the theatre.

The muvie rox so go and watch it its total paisa vasool if u understand Hindi. Good performance by irfan khan and srk.
the movie was a bit of a dissapointment. the story was stretched out over too long, there wasnt enough to show. the music, all though good, did not really have any bearing on the movie. as well as this, the ending was horribly cliche. and right through out the movie, the sounds never matched the mouths of the actors. editting was really an issue. not that great.
not to mention the movie was more an advertisement for shah rukh khan.
Its a nice movie. Dont listen to anyone. Just go and watch the movie. You will enjoy it very much. Some people say its a bad movie b’cos they dont like SRK. But they shouldn’t forget SRK is the only Indian actor who is famous in hollywood and recognized internationally. He was the one from bollywood, invited to be the jury to this year international film festival. So dont try to judge that man by ur silly quotes.He is beyond ur imagination. The god of acting and the Baadshah of Bollywood.
Billu is a very very entertaining movie (based on the themes of relationship). And don’t miss it.

I want to be a director…so i think about hw the films should be n all. SO i SAY…This is a movie…which should be watched…atleast ONCE…not for timepass. I mean, If you want to be entertained each and every second, then i dont think you are the right person to watch this movie…YES SHAHRUKH KHAN is a “MASALA MOVIE SELECTOR”…BUT THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT…IT WILL JUST WIPE YOU OF IN THE LAST 20 min.

NO Indian actor is famous here, definitely not Shah Rukh Khan (unless you are talking about South Asian audience).
Kal Penn, who is Indian American is more famous. Irfan Khan is probably more famous. Kabir Bedi is probably more famous. Aishwarya Rai is probably more famous. Definitely NOT SRK.

Oh and don’t go by who is in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum – that doesn’t mean they are famous to Westerners, that is done for commercial reasons due to the huge NRI populations in England and US.

Its a real movie which touches people lives. There is one saying that people who **** in Mumbai have their luck under leaves and how fortune changes for one person. Me I have done acting course from Namit Kapoor in Mumbai and have seen people like Hrithik Roshan, John Abraham becomming stars from no where. This Billoo movie touches hear and soul. Irfan Khan, SRK both are gr8 and this is 5 star movie. I would rate it as all time gr8 movies. This is a story of a simple villagers and how there life changes when a film crew comes there. U would know the perception of villagers towards stars. It has comedy, romance, glamour, art infact I should say its a Fiesta. Gr8 Going. Should be the Block buster movies of this year. Ghajini is no where reality.

Just watched the flick, and it’s an absolute waste of time!! it’s like kismat konnection… it’s a hollywood feelgood movie adapted to the indian backdrop. The songs r out of place, the comedy is not even funny, there is not enough srk, and more then anything else…. the villegers r annoying, and u feel like just slapping all of them… and then the producers and directors for making such a bakwas-3hours-of-my-life-stealing flick!!
Malayalam version is far better than the hindi or tamil versions…… i have seen all the 3 versions

Shah Rukh khan cant Act. Not since 2000 atleast. Okay Baazigar was awesome. Darr was great…DDLJ rocked. But thats it. Why do people go watch his movies then ? They just like seeing him on screen. Why do people watch salman khan…same reason. Why do people watch Amir khan ? Hes a great actor and delivers all the time. Why Saif ? coz hes a much better actor than Shah Rukh or Salman. Why Hritik ? people like seeing him on screen plus hes a great actor though not too versatile and sometimes his performance is cliched.
What Im saying is that people would go watch a movie if they like the ppl who are acting in it even if the movie sukcs.
But people would always go watch a great movie even if stars nobody they like.

Try and see it from the ordinary person who has no fame, money, simple person who did help his friend in their old days without waiting to receive anything in return and even in thinking that his friend may have forgotten him because of fame and money but that is not right to think of anyone until you know hear it from him. you can learn so much of from this film

I love the film Billu baber it’s a hit! Deepika is smashin in love mera hit and so is kareena in marjani but priyanka is soooooooooo much better in you get me rockin n reelin.I love the lyrics to these songs
