Movie Review: Chandni Chowk To China; Star Cast:Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranvir Shorey, Mithun Chakravorthy and Gordon Liu; Direction: Nikhil Advani; Rating: **1/2; Old wine in new bottle.
A small village in China is terrorized by one cruel gang lord, Hojo (Gordon). Fed up of his tyrannies, the hapless villagers consult an astrologer who tells them that China’s most famous ancient warrior Liu Sheng has re-incarnated and he is the one who will kill Hojo. Two villagers go in the hunt of this re-born Liu Sheng which happens to be one staying in the famous Chandni Chowk of Delhi in India. This bloke Siddhu (Akshay) in real is anything but their warrior they are in the look out for. Working in a paratha shop, as a vegetable cutter, the portly Siddhu is forever chasing dreams of a luxurious life without wanting to do hard work to achieve it. His foster father, Dada (Mithun) is fed up of his lethargic ways and always tries to make him realize his hidden potential. The two Chinese villagers finally find Siddhu and with the help of a fraud Chinese astrologer Chopstick (Ranveer) manage to take him to their village in China. Chopstick too tags along as Siddhu’s translator. During the journey, Siddhu encounters Sakhi (Deepika) a popular model and falls for her instantly but soon his hopes come crashing as he comes across her lethal side of that of a thief. But little does he know that its not Sakhi but her long lost twin Suzie aka Meow Meow (Deepika again) whom he has got confused with. What happens when Siddhu arrives in the remote Chinese village and how Hojo reacts to his arrival and what it leads to forms the rest of the film!
There had been lots of expectations raised from the slick promos of the film but unfortunately, the film doesn’t really end up being the joy ride it promises to be. The biggest flaw of CC2C lies in its predictable script which packs in all the 70s masala including lost and found, revenge drama, the triumph of good over evil just that the setting is changed from India to China. The film begins well with a superbly shot fight on the wall of China but then the pace dips as Siddhu’s daily life is introduced. Then again post the interval any average cinegoer can predict what is in store at what intervals and there is where boredom starts creeping in. You keep looking at your watch hoping it to end. Also, despite a good built up given to Hojo’s Kung Fu expertise and hopes raised about the one on one fight between him and Siddhu, the climax fight ends up being very short and disappointing.
Amongst the most redeemable factors about CC2C is Akshay Kumar. He makes you laugh, cry and cheer for him but then again he is let down by an average script. But it’s a great treat watching Akshay going back in the action mode and doing some really breathtaking Kung Fu stunts. Deepika Padukone in a double role does well but the chemistry between her and Akki is clearly missing. Gordon Liu as the villain is simply superb. He manages to bring out terror just with a stare. Ranvir is good as usual whereas Mithun impresses in the few sequences that he gets.
The music of the film appears better when watching the songs onscreen as they have been very lavishly picturised, especially the title track. The film scores full marks on the technical front. But we wish we could say the same about the script!
The film is a must see for hardcore Akshay Kumar fans, for the rest well one can only say that if you want to get nostalgic about the 70s cinema with some humor mixed with it then going for this 2 hour 40 minutes film won’t be a bad idea.

Read the really bad reviews all over the news from indiafm etc etc. But come on, this is a Akshay Kumar movie. Over the last couple of years from the Khiladi movies to the Heera Pheeri movies to the Singh is King ( urban myth has it that the producer came up with the title first off a truck bumper sticker and then created the story!) to this and we have all watched those and loved them, and this movie fits exactly into all of those. A fan of those will definitely like this!!
Akshay Kumar is the true successor to the Bachchan of the 80s and 70s ( the Namak Halal, the AAA days! no one makes those madcap movies anymore and that is essentially because no one of the new generation can carry off those madcap antics – talking to mirrors (AAA) etc etc). He proved this with SIK and carries on that tradition with CC2C.
As everyone by now knows AK plays a chef who is mistaken for the reincarnation of Leing Shung ( famous Chinese legend who protected China on the Great Wall of China) and is taken off to China to save a village from Hujo.
Along the way he runs into Deepika who plays twin sisters ( and big big shock – its a been a while since an Indian actress has been given a substantial role in a complete time pass movie!, also been a while since movies have had twin sisters, amnesia etc etc), AK falls in love, loses a family member , starts to believe in himself and finally defeats the villain.
Go and watch this movie, it is well worth the time and money being spent.
( the caveat being : if you are in a mood for A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan , KKKG , KKHH, go watch Che Part 1 or Twilight or the Reader or rent those instead. If in the mood for a SIK, Heera Pheeri, Namak Halal kind of entertainment , then go watch this , its a great 2.5 hours ).

As far as Akki is concerned, Yes, i agree his movies are bad. Thats only cuz he’s not getting good scripts. And he has to somehow prove he can do any type of acting and not only action movies! but the moment the desi stuff started it was a terrible mindfuck..as i could see Mr akki being kicked by mr mithoon and the impact of the kick made akki reach the clouds in the sky and come back on the ground without breaking n e bones or neither was he hurt..even rajnikanth is no match for this movie as the action shown is total bogus!!

This was the worst movie I have seen in quite some time. Laughing at all the Hindu-Muslim BS. If you want to know why AK is not the best actor then this is the movie to watch. He needs to choose his scripts a little more wisely. Once he chooses the right films I have no doubt he’ll be right there with SRK and Amir. People don’t get awards based on their religion and if that was the case the Hindus should easily be dominating.

I was really xcited to go c dis movie…….
I went an hour early to get the ticket……fought through the crowd…all for akshay…..I enter the hall wait for the movie to begin…..So the movie begins n they show these chinese dudes kickin some ***….n Im so xcited…..bt dat was all…..everything else was so drab….I left the hall after xactly watching 19:30 minutes of it….I was xtremely disappointed with the movie….n guess what…..It turns out to be a bigger flop than even karzzz…..& ppl ….pls admit it…Deepika padukone cant act……she is only an arm candy for the actors….I mean …seriously….did she deserve all those awards for ‘the best newcomer’ for just waving her arm around in OSO……and she’s so proud about it…….I guess this will be a good lesson 4 her…….and 1 more thing……dearie….you seriously ****……!!:p

CC2k is a good entertainer… for those who have missed it on the big screen I suggest you pick it up on the DVD.. Its good fun, AKKI acting is the usual, excellent comic scenes, great to relax. Depika has done extremelly well especially the fight scenes and good acting as Suzy the chinese version. Mithun was most commendable – Great come back.. on the whole good blend of both cultures Indo and Chinese – seemlessly integrated…
