‘Choti Bahu’ premiers on Zee TV this month
What makes a marriage? Is it taking the vows or is it observing the moral, spiritual, emotional and physical requirements of married life? Was Meera Bai in that sense married to Lord Krishna? These are some of the questions that have been important to Indian philosophy and Indian tradition for a long long time. Zee’s new offering addresses these questions in the mould of a contemporary, engaging and dramatic show called “Chhoti Bahu” premiering on 8h December, Monday - Friday at 7:30pm.
“Chhoti Bahu” focuses on the life of Radhika, the adopted daughter of a temple priest, whose life revolves around her friendship, love and affection for Lord Krishna. She will do anything for the family that has adopted her, in particular her sister Vishakha, the biological daughter of the priest. But once, just once, she lets her good nature get the better of her as she covers up for her sister and that changes her entire life.
But this short synopsis hardly does justice to the subtle nuances of the show. Coming as it does from one of the most creative production houses in the country, DJ’s Creative Unit; the show asks some really crucial questions about the institution of marriage, friendship and even spirituality in the modern, shining, racing ahead India.
How sacrosanct should merely the vows of marriage be in the absence of everything else? Given that India has changed so much over the last two decades, why do so many women still feel that they have to make commitments based on events they have no control about? Has the promise of a new India then not touched women that much, and are there only a few places – mostly urban – where Indian women are beginning to have more and more influence over their own lives?
Said Rubina Dilaik, the actress playing the challenging protagonist’s role of Radhika, “It is so difficult to get into the head of a character like Radhika, who at the same time surrenders to circumstances, yet has a shining innocence, integrity and belief in her Lord, that sometimes makes me feel that I am missing out on something despite having so much control over my own life as a modern Indian woman.” Other characters in the show are Avinash Sachdev playing the lead opposite Rubina, Rajeev Verma, Surinder Pal, Gopi Desai, Rita Bhadhuri, Prabha Sinha, Priyanka Mishra and Samta Sagar, etc.
Ajay Bhalwankar, Programming Head, Zee TV, said, “We had great difficulty in casting for this show because the protagonist is not as much of a go-getter initially. But if you look at the female leads in all our shows, you will see certain common threads. We strongly believe in the power of the woman in families and in society and came up with the idea of this show to throw light on the fact that the promise of confident, outward looking India has perhaps touched women in a far greater degree than men. We were also interested in exploring the role of spiritual relationships with the divine in a woman’s life today. We can tell you that casting for this show was one of our greatest challenges but we were lucky to find actresses who embody the characters and make their contradictions and subtleties come out wonderfully.”
The show is being made by DJ’s Creations, Tony and Deeya Singh who have given some super shows for the channel before like Jhoomein Jiya Re.

I think this show is absolutely ridiculos. I don’t know what the production was thinking to make such a serial. It has made Hindu culture a laughing stock. i don’t understand how you (the viewers) could let it happen. If the priest’s family allow unwed the girl to live as the purohit’s bahu then what do you expect from the rest of the people. We look upon the priest as a role model, guardian. This shows more sins are committed by the religious people. What a joke. So you don’t have any other issue to talk about. This is exploiting the hindu religion. What do we tell our children. It is OK to live with other person even if you are not married. It is full of decite, and unrespectable.
What a shame.

Now days this show become boring because the story is going too much slow. there is not any interesting parts in serial for which we wait it to watch.
The character of radhika is now too much boring she is only doing sacrifise in this show and dont even answers of blame putting on her characters by her dadi and mother
Bhishakha role is far more better than dev and radhika she is active in this serial
I just love Dev and Radhika and hope they will be together soon.
I hope radhika’s role will change as I am fed up of seeing her sad and in tears all the time, I want to see her as a happy and assertive person. From all the previous post I ve read this serial is getting very popular among viewers. The main reason is the faith that Radhika has in her ‘Kanha’ and she suffers silently everything. Devotion -bhakti raas is very powerful in this serial. Its leaving me guessing that the Director must ve strong belief in Krsna as devotee to venture in this spiritual direction.Indeed its the 1st time Krsna is seen as responding to devotee call in a serial. He portrayed Krsna so gentle & divine.
A good serie that depicts the rituals & symbols of wedding. As for Dev the perfect husband material any girl would dream to have. So much love in his heart this soul to soul connection.
Vishakha is the spoilt imp that likes easy life and is an opportunist in quest of fame & richness. I hope she also run away from here with some jewels…
The vilain dadi is an egoist lady that keeps saying Radhe Krsna shame shame. I hope something ill really happen to her. Will Kanha set het to task? I hope so, she can’t get away with the atrocities she inflicts on the poor Radhika.
The priest maintains his spiritual values so far. But my big question will he stick to his principles when he learns the truth about his daughter gimmicks on the wedding. Will he sacrifice Radhika in the name of society? I am really eager to know how the direction is going to bring Dev & Radhika together.

I luv his serial. This is the first serial I felt like watching after last 3 yrs.. i just saw one episode for 10 minutes & the pure innocence of Radhika & Dev just captivated me. I searched for all the previous episodes & now wait eagerly for every current episode . The dialogues are so appropriate.The songs are wonderful. the story is great. All the characters do their job very well. The songs are so melodious & sweet. I hope the director does not drag the meeting of Dev & radhika too long. because I am sure there are a lot of things going to happen even if they meet. Also.. since all the wedding rituals & even those before that have actually being peformed on Radhika. Obviously, she is the one who will end up parmanently as Choti Bahu. So far, the events have been in proportion & worth watching again & again. The dialogues from Radhika’s dad are also so educating the current generatiion.

Please script writer and producer stop this non sense. The story line is very regressive. What you are showing is highly unethical. Even if it has to be made a gripping story, why show such unbelievable story. If you stretch this too long, people will stop watching and the serial will go down the drain like “K” serials. Positivity is way of life. You can not show such high level of immorality. also you are showing a girl who is an ardent worshipper of Lord Krishna. Can a real worshipper do the things she is doing? Even God will not allow such injustice……..
