Bollywood is a place where the heroes are given more importance and the they always see to it that the female co star gets less role,less coverage and less publicity.But times are changing now 2008 has been a year where our heroines have done full fledged meaty roles and on the basis of their hits and misses we analyise the top 5 bollywood actresses of 2008.
Kareena Kapoor - Started her year 2008 with Tashan which did not do well in the boxoffice.The film was produced by Aditya Chora and Yash Chopra under Yash Raj films. Akshay ,Anil,Kareena and Saif were appreciated for their performances.The film was not for intellectuals or for people looking for a perfect script,as it was nothing new.Kareena looked glamourous in a bikini. On the day of its release, the film opened to a 75-80% response but well short of the expected bumper opening due to the multiplex revenue sharing problem, which didn’t allow the film to be released in major multiplexes across India. Due to this, the film lost a major chunk of its revenue. Then came in Roadside romeo the first major computer animated film.The title character, a dog living in the city of Mumbai is voiced by Saif and his girlfriend, Laila, is voiced by Kareena.The story was about a rich dog who was abandoned on the streets of Mumbai and all the difficulties and all the dangerous characters he comes across.This film again opened with a poor response and dint do well in the boxoffice.Kareena’s third and last film of the year was Golmaal Returns which was a remake of an old Bollywood comedy. Kareena plays the role of a suspicious wife of Ajay Devgan who hapens to spend one whole night out of the house with Celina Jaitely just to help her from some bad people.To hide this fact from his wife all the stories that he has to cook and all the difficulties that happen then is actually the story of the film.The film did really well and was a super hit and inspite of Kareena not having a meaty role in it she still managed to get a hit in her kitty.
Katrina Kaif - Her first release of the year was Race-an Abbas Mastaan thriller with lots of enjoyable twists and turns.Katrina is paired with Akshaye khanna,while Saif and Bipasha are aso there in the cast.Katrina plays the soft decent cute secretary of Saif who adores Saif and is with him through thick and thin and how in the climax turns out to be the bad mans fiancee and how she backstabs Saif.This film did really well in the boxoffice and was said to be a hit. her next film was Singh is King which was a super hit in the box office and Katrina is paired with Akshay kumar and inspite of the story revolving around a punjabi villager who comes to town and all the misadventours that happen and he ends up to become the Australian underworld king,Katrina’s role is worth a watch.
Her third film of the year was Hello where she is paired opposite her beau Salman.in the entire film her role was only for a few minutes.So it was her guest appearance in the film and the film too dint do well in the box office. Katrina’s fourth and the last film of this year was Subhash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj where again she is seen with Salman in the film. Anil Kapoor and Zayed are also included in the cast. Katrina gave a good performance but the film in all did not do well. So Katrina managed to get two hits and two flops in the year.
Priyanka Chopra -This actress has given the maximum number of release in 2008. Her first release is Love Story 2050 where she is paired opposite Harman Baweja,it was a mega budget special effects film.Priyanka’s performance was not appreciated and the film crashed badly at the box office.Her next one was God Tussi Great ho opposite Salman Khan.The film was a remake of the Hollywood film Bruce Almighty.Where Salman challenges God and in return God comes down to Earth and asks him to take up his job and all the mess that happens after that. The film did not make news in the box office. This was followed by Chamku, the story of a shooter Bobby Deol and how he falls in love with Priyanka and his life changes after that.Priyanka’s performance was appreciated but the film failed in the box office.Then came Drona a contemporary fantasy fable. The film was a horrific disaster.Then came Priyanka’s two most awaited films of the year Fashion and Dostana.In both the films priyanka has acted brilliantly.In Fashion she plays a small town girl who comes to the city of dreams to fulfill her dreams and for that she has to pay a heavy price.In Dostana she plays a funfilled light character of being friends to John and Abhishekh.Both the films did really well in the box office giving Priyanka her much awaited hits.
Rani Mukherji - Had just one film which was Thoda Pyar thoda Magic where Rani plays the role of a childlike,mischeivious ,lovable angel who comes to the rescue of four orphans and their dad.The film was directed by Kunal Kohli but he was still unable to create the magic of Hum Tum.It did not do well in the box office.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - This year Aishwarya came up with two releases Sarkar Raj and Jodhaa Akbar. In Jodhaa Akbar she was opposite Hritik Roshan. A romantic, biographical and historical movie, which was set in a era of revolt, conspiracies and war.Aishwarya looked and acted brilliantly in the film.The film did good business in India and very good buisness in the overseas.Her second flick Sarkar Raj was opposite hubby Abhishekh Bachan.It also got her critical acclaim apart from box office success.
After the entire analysis of all the five actresses we come to the conclusion that Katrina Kaif is on the top of the list with two hits in a row and two flops,then in the second position its Priyanka Chopra with two hits and four flops and then its Aishwarya Rai with one hit and one flop followed by Kareena who has two flops and one hit and then comes Rani with only one release and that to a flop.

Sampurn, I dont understand your analysis. You are contradicting yourself when you say in the end you say Ash had one hit and one flop. In the preceding paragraphs you yourself acknowledged that both Jodhaa Akbar and Sarkar Raj did well at the box office. That would make it 2 hits for Ash, won’t it? And a 100% strike rate for her this year. Even otherwise everyone knows that JA was a super hit and Sarkar Raj did reasonably well. And Ash had performance oriented roles in both and got critial acclaim for both too. What did Katrina have to do in her so called hits - Singh Is King and Race ? Look pretty, that’s it. Priyanka did well in Fashion. In Dostana, she didn’t have much to do. Plus she had 4 big flops too. Thus Ash should be rightly way up at No.1 and not No.3 which you awarded her. I’m sure I’ll be proved right when Ash walks away with all the major Best Actress awards for Jodhaa Akbar or Sarkar Raj this year. Just a matter of time :).
Sooraj and “Anonnymous”, go and check BOI dudes and increase your knowledge. Sarkar Raj is a flop. so Ash had only Jodha akbar as hit.

Just a reality check for all Ash Rai fans - Sarkar Raj was a flop. So, don’t even try to convince yourselves that it was close to a hit.
The fact is that so far in her career, 24 of 31 releases have bombed which demonstrates a very unsuccessful record by any standard. Its obvious that she’s only been around so far because of her looks. Between 2002 and 2006 Aishwarya gave 13 flops in a row and all her films bombed at the box office until Dhoom 2 came along. And please spare us the “she does meaningful roles” bulls…what “meaning” did her role have in Dhoom 2 other than dancing around trees/beaches in skimpy outfits? She’s an absolute ***** for rejecting films opposite Hollywood’s undisputed numero uno Will Smith in Hancock for a CHARACTER ARTIST’S role in Pink Panther 2. Don’t believe me? Just wait for it’s release! Other than PP2, she will have NO RELEASES in 2009. At 35, her unsuccessful Bollywood career is finally over and it won’t be long before you start hearing news of pregnancy. Good riddens!

To Kat fan Rajeev, I’m not talking of BOI here. Sampurn herself has posted here that Ash got critical acclaim for Sarkar Raj “apart from box office success”.She’s contradicting herself.
Okay, even if SR is a flop Ash had a worthwhile performance in it. And I would anyday prefer Ash in a “flop” like SR than a nonsensical hit like Singh Is King where she’d have had to play just Akshay Kumar’s arm candy. So what if Ms.Kaif stood like a wall-flower in a series of hits? In how many of them can she claim to have given a real “performance”? Ms.Kaif has only to thank Akshay Kumar for her hits. And we don’t have to wait any longer to know the fate of Yuvraj. Just visit BOI and check out the dismal opening it’s got. People were boasting that Katrina was alone there on the posters of Yuvraj. Look what happened when she was allowed to carry the film on her weak shoulders. Both she and her film fell flat on their face.
As for your accusation of Ash having only 8 hits in 11 years, all I can say is she was never interested in being a decorative piece opposite any superstar. She always looked for meaty roles. Had she gone the Katrina way she’d have had like 20 hits by now. Yeah, hits for name’s sake. But when she gives a hit like Davdas or JA she make’s sure that it’s equivalent to the so called 6 back-to-back hits of her contemporaries.
Finally, people have been saying that Ash will be “finished soon” since 2003 when SRK dumped her from Chalte Chalte and they had a fallout. It’s been 5 years and she’s still going strong. Here’s one actress whose market value wasn’t diminished a bit even after her marriage, something which even the likes of Madhuri and Kajol couldn’t do.

Secondly, you are saying Sarkar Raj was good and SIK was nonsensical. Listen, you are noone to coment on audience taste, Sarkar Raj was flop everywhere in India and overseas- only Maharastra was average. SIK is the highest grosser of this year and third all-time highest with 152.25 cr business worldwide and highly successful in entertaining audience. What more do you want from a movie?
And one more thing- JO HIT HAI WOHI FIT HAI- kat is a huge hit among the audience so she is fit- thats why she wins all the polls, surveys and everything else and thats why she is the best. But Aishwarya has no star-power; only in USA box-office she sells otherwise she cannot sell a movie.

Okay, Ash’s initial hits were with Sallu and SRK. But she had to “perform” in those films. She also contributed to those films to be hits. Co-starring with Sallu,Akshay,SRK is one thing and solely piggy-backing on them for a hit is another thing. Let’s face it. katrina was just used as a decorative piece in her films with Akshay Kumar. She had nothing to do in them.
Moreover, which other actress here a huge number of hits? Most of Rani’s hits are with the SRK-Yashraj-KJo camp.
kareena has only 3 solo hits to her credit till date -MKKH, Jab We Met and Golmaal returns out of which only in JWM she had a performnace oriented role.
And yes I maintain that SIK is nonsense, utter nonsense. That’s my opinion. Doesn’t matter how many crores it made worldwide, that’s purely on Akshay’s star power and the hype the film got. Infact it got a huge opening. In the 2nd week it had fallen heavily (about 70%). But by then it had already made it’s money.

Rizwan’s point about Konkona is true. She never gave any hits, she’s not a “star”. But that’s not the case with Ash, she’s a huge star.
Ash had a superhit in JA. She had a meaty role in it and performed brilliantly.
I agree her 2nd release SR was a hit only in Mumbai and Mysore. But there too she had a meaty role and got unanimous critical acclaim. In such a scenario my common sense tells me that Ash ranks higher than Kat. If anyone comes close to Ash this year it’s Priyanka Chopra with two hits - Fashion and Dosatna and a superb performance in Fashion.
To me ( and movie experts will agree with me) the ranks are decided based on - Hits + Performance.
If hits alone are enough to make you No.1 a heroine can continuosly do itsy bitsy roles along with every superstar and big banner and claim to be No.1.
