Film review: Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi

Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi ReviewStarring: Sonu Sood, Eesha Koppikar, Alok Nath, Vishal Malhotra; Director: Kaushik Ghatak; Rating: 1.5 out of 5*; Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi: Bores you to sleep

The film narrates the tale of Chandni (Eesha) who belongs to a middle-class family, living in one of the tiny by lanes of old Bhopal. Chandni lives with her father and younger siblings - Anuj & Sandhya. Chandni, who is deeply attached to her school going brother and sister, is trained in classical and folk music. During a stage performance she falls in love with Prem (Sonu) who hails from a rich business family. He is an unconventional ghazal singer and is full of mischief and pranks. Everything is going smoothly and picture perfect until, on the day of their engagement Chandni’s father passes away. Suddenly she is saddled with the responsibility of being the eldest in the family. On one hand, her ‘mehendi’ adorned hands are beckoning her to the dream home for her fiance and the other hands are her siblings, whom she cannot take along with her to her in laws house. She then takes the painful decision of not going ahead with her marriage with Prem so that she can bring up her little brother and sister with self-respect. Prem understands her and stands by her through thick and thin as she goes through her struggle. He unconditionally waits for Chandni for 12 long years until she fulfills all her responsibilities as an elder sister.

Blatantly lifted from its very own 1973 film, Tapasya, this Rajshri film doesn’t offer anything new. In fact the packaging, the music and even the technique of EVAB also belongs to that era. Rajshris seems to be one production house which refuses to come out the mould of its old success formula of their hero named Prem, poor heroine, three marriages, one engagement, many rituals, one death and a happy ending! Clearly aiming this film for the interiors, the makers have smartly avoided releasing this dated film in the multiplexes. The music by Ravindra Jain appears more boring as in the first half one slow tuned song comes in quick succession of the other.

The acting however is decent. Sonu Sood pitches in a good act and so does Eesha Koppikar. Not once does she remind you in this film that she once the Khallas babe. Alok Nath is good form after a long time. Amrita Prakash is sweet. Vishal Malhotra as Eesha’s brother is also good.

Kaushik Ghatak in his directorial debut doesn’t impress much. His narrative technique is completely sleep inducing.

One hopes the Rajshri’s settle for a more contemporary fare next time around. -(SAMPURN)

  1. I have not seen such a charming movie now a days.Watching this movie i saw people were clapping for the moments held in this, now a days we do not see such honour for movies. EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI has a strong story to tell. Besides, there’re many moments in this film that touch the pulse of your heart, that make you moist-eyed. And that’s where this film scores big time. EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI is a simple story of sacrifice that aims at pulling your heart strings. . Come, watch EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI with your family and re-connect with your roots…

  2. People will feel/coment it is old story. Yeah, but still truth is it is ageless/timeless. We saw/will see this old, our and new time to come. If we eat palak paneer and it is good, we say it is good. What is the harm? The aim is to eat food and generate energy. Similarly, the aim of movie is education and entertainment. Nowadays, we have/are forgetting that. Today it has just remained entertainment. For the people with that perspective, yes this is same old movie/****. but, if you honestly judge the movie without any bias as Manavhas commented there is a lot in this movie that many movies of today do not have. Also, from perspective of risk, it is requires courage to be different and I think Rajshri has always shown that. Overall, this is a good movie from so many ways. It’s just some people will understand now and some later and some don’t. But, the show must go on!

  3. I don’t understand why every media house has criticized the movie whereas no viewer has actually disliked the movie. I might be wrong but I strongly believe that they have been paid by some rival agency to criticize and downplay the movie.
    Shame on such media.

  4. HEy i really liked this movie i am not gonna lie….i dont get why people cant enjoy movies with simple stories these days…

and i agree with u arun…i think they are being paid by a rival company…cuz no one seems to hate the movie?!?!!

  5. Me too Like the movie 4/5

  6. i honestly liked the movie. why can’t there be more movies like this? movies that connect with people and touch their hearts. Rajshri films is trying hard to keep the young generation connected with thier roots and i applaud them for doing so in such a mainstream cinema.

  7. Ek vivaah aisa bhi…is a movie that touches your soul… Really “aisa pyaar na dekha na sunna”… Rajshi justifies marriage in all its movies… In these times of quick divorces, live-in relationships, infedility that prevail in the west, and we aping them blindly, this film emphasises on true Indian values that our culture stands for… We should salute them as they are the only production house which stands for true rich Indian culture.Three cheers for Rajshi, “HIP- HIP- HURRAY!!!”

  14. this movie is simply supereb

  15. ok i agreed

  16. A film that makes one smile, with which makes the same person cry, well that has happened to me. Many say “move with time” If moving with time means losing your culture, losing your values, then i’d rather be outdated and stick with my culture, as that is what I respect, and now some of our brothers and sisters want to go on with the “hip” music, that sometimes just doesn’t make sense, well that’s to me, and why move on to english wordings in our hindi songs, if so what will be the difference between the “hollywood or english” music and hindi music, according to my point of view the music of EK VIVAH….AISA BHI is just fine, and this story is what makes us appreciate what we indian’s have in our blood, which is a good thing, Rajshri you rock, and KEEP MAKING FILMS like EK VIVAH AISA BHI.

  18. I actually liked the movie, and this is from a 21 year old who grew up in the US. It’s not amazing or edgy, but it has soul and its message about love and sacrifice is something that you don’t see enough nowadays.

I would recommend others to give it a shot, you might be surprised - I know I was.

  19. 1st half was boring
