Movie Review: Karz; Star Cast: Himesh Reshammiya, Urmila Matondkar, Danny, Raj Babbar and introducing Shweta Kumar; Director: Satish Kaushik; Rating: **1/2
This remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1980s super hit Karz has basically the same storyline as the original with a little twist added to it. So for all those who haven’t seen the original, the plot goes like this – Kamini (Urmila) marries Ravi Verma (Dino Morea) for his riches and bumps him off immediately after their marriage. Two decades later, the biggest music sensation in South Africa, Monty (Himesh) one day suddenly during a rehearsal starts playing a tune and goes into a trance, with intense visual flashes of a mansion, a temple, a beautiful girl and ends up collapsing unconscious. Further a flash back reveals that Monty was actually Ravi Verma in his previous life, married to a beautiful girl called Kamini. Monty now has the grave realization of having been reborn in his current persona. His beautiful love interest (Tina) is none other than Kamini’s foster daughter. From here starts Monty’s new journey. A journey of revenge! How he accomplishes it and gives justice to Ravi Verma’s hapless old mother and sister forms the rest of the film.
The basic premise of this film is even exciting for anyone of today’s generation. But one thing that one needs to keep in mind while watching this film is that it is not completely aimed at the multiplex going audience. It has been treated like a typical masala film aimed at the masses and to enjoy one needs to keep his brains back at home.
The things that work are – The enthusiasm of Himesh in reprising Rishi Kapoor’s Monty. Himesh has given it his all and his efforts show. You root for him in the second half when he starts playing games with Urmila. The action sequences, especially the climax ones are mind blowing. Another good plus is the performance by Urmila in her first ever full blown villainous role. Her venomous act is bound to get her few awards this year for sure. She has even exposed her body a lot in those glamorous dresses. Gulshan Grover (as Sir Judah) in his unusual get up leaves a mark. Danny as the every helpful Kabir chacha (played by Pran in the original) and Asrani lend able support.
But the things that don’t really work are – The pairing of Himesh and debutante Shweta Kumar. They share an extremely thanda chemistry. Considering it is her debut film, the poor gal hasn’t been properly presented as well. In the acting department she still has a long way to go. The styling of the film is extremely poor excluding that of Himesh’s. The set design is straight out of the 80s films. Also, despite having so many dance numbers, there is not a single song that stays in your mind thanks to some really pathetic choreography with those now mandatory firang dancers around. The high point of the original Karz, the Ek Hasina Thi number falls flat in here in its new version. As a director, Satish Kaushik fails to add any independent distinct style.
Finally our verdict is – Go for it if even if you are not a die hard Himesh fan and you will definitely get in more than what you had expected. -(SAMPURN)
this is the worst movie after drone that has hit us ..mr chhamiya assumes that jumping is dancing and hamming is acting..the songs are pathertic the pathos is just isnt there ..avoid at all cost

As usual Himesh sucks. I wonder why they wasted all that money?
It is a very good movie with good songs. It does not matter if the movie is a hit or a flop (because every individual has his own way of looking at things, what matters more is the time and effort taken by a star to complete the movie. Negative reviews are just written by people to remove their personal frustrations and hatred.
Keep it up Himesh and God Bless You. Do not worry about what the critics say but keep going for the sake of your die hard fans.

Urmila Matondkar’s acting is the only USP in this movie.
The first post is a bit emotional response but quite realistic.
Although it may offend some die-hard fans of him…including my own.
Well I don’t think Himesh himself will have time for posting such reviews It is a much successful person….more than you and me…So if a person is not able to do it I feel that person should also not comment bad on it

Making **** sick-remakes, such pathetic movies, buying ratings, and forcibly showing soem pathetic songs and trailers…when they are very hard to bearable…is a crime against cinema.

You may prise him coz u are his die-hard fan and adulate him for whatever he does or he is….and call him successful…may be more than you..but keep this comaprison to u ..and don’t include me..coz people like him don’t deserve a comparison with doctor like me who cures illness …and not make people sick…like he does.

The film is a must watch for Himesh fans. His hard work is clearly shown in the movie. Urmila rocks in her new Avtar. Good music. Overall 7/10

I feel that Himesh “plugs” himself too much on TV. He should put the effort into facial expressions and building muscle. He tries to act with changing his volume, and that is not effective. Sets are not “History” nor is Himesh. Dont have much to say about the gals as Himesh has made himself the focal point withour realizing that a succesful film takes teamwork. The new chic got the short end of the stick from Himesh and the director. I went to see the film as I knew it would be dinner table discussion. Himesh are you serious about acting or becoming the actor who becomes ‘news in legend time !!

I see afew emails that are idolatory or state that we should not criticize what we cannot do better. This is a site for CRITICS – maybe you need to look up the definition of critcism.
now that the verdict is out and the film has bombed everywhere we are very satisfied it deserved the fate hopefully rmps will not stand up as doctors petty thieves will not act as dacoits and it will be a civilised society as himesh bhai will now only do what he is best at recycling his own tunes and sometimes resourcing from karunesh hits like panjab

But one thing i would like to tell Himesh Sir that in the movie his acting was good, if u don’t my small suggestion that in the movie starting continuosly there are three songs which will irritate the public. There should be some gap between each and every song. If such gap would have been there then the film would have been more fabulous. I hope the same will not be repeated in the coming films of Himesh sir. Songs are Superb no doubt about it. We can watch movie once. Anybody giving worst comments on Himesh sir try to remember that he is singer, writer and music composer. He is trying to keep the track of level in acting also. I think if anything wrong in the film means its Direction problem not actors. But honestly, we can watch movie once.

One thing would like to tell that Karzzz movie is good when compared to Aap ka Suroor, Kidnap and Drona.
