What made 1920 a success at box office?

1920 Stars1920 has clicked and quite a few detractors in the industry are left wondering about the reason behind the film’s success. After all the film had Vikram Bhatt tag to it, the name which had seen 10 consecutive flops to his name in last 6 years. The film only featured newcomers, who were neither star-children nor heavily hyped. Adnan Sami’s music hardly did wonders to the film’s pre-release hype while the Ramzan/Ganesh Chaturthi period was hardly considered to be conducive to a film’s theatrical run.

So what really worked in the film’s favor? One basic thing - Smart packaging!

Vikram Bhatt and company knew what they were offering - a horror thriller which relief on chills and spooky moments. This is what they capitalized on from Day one of the film’s promotion. The first thing they did right was to come up with a brilliantly designed coffee table book which was circulated amongst select media people and friends. The book pretty much declared the mood of the film and made people talking about what Vikram Bhatt had in the offering. Then began the promos which quickly moved on from song and dance routine to the ‘real’ stuff which very much showed the audience what 1920 was made of.

To begin with the promos started giving hints of the spooky feel that 1920 carried. However, as 10 days remained for the release of the film, the makers went full on with the promotion and released numerous promos that made it loud and clear that 1920 would be one scary film to watch in theaters. Background music, sound design, special effects, cutting edge frames - all of this came together in those few seconds which enticed audience enough to walk into the theaters and enjoy the spine chilling moments.

This is what happened as the film took a decent start at the box office. Good word of mouth took the case forward for this medium budget film and as the first week comes to an end today, the writing is clear on the wall that 1920 has succeeded at the box office. The content worked wonders yet again, just like PHOONK, MUMBAI MERI JAAN and ROCK ON in last few weeks, in spite of no stars to boast of. (SAMPURN)

  3. I have seen the movie on last Sunday and I still think about the movie all time. I loved the movie in true sense. Though it has copied scary scenes from ‘Exorcist’ but I really dont bother about that and still I find its better than ‘Exorcist’. I have never shut my eyes when I am watching any of the horror movie what I actually did in a scene in this movie. I couldnt keep my nerve tight. I really loved that movie. Now Vikram Bhatt is now one of my Fav. director. Hats off to him. I wish everybody would love this movie.

  4. Success of 1920 is solely of Hanuman Chalisa. During the Ramzan, muslims do not turnup to the cinema halls. But Hanuman Chalisa of 1920 has attracted Hindus. Any of the previous movies never depicted the glory and effect of Hanuman Chlisa on Bhoot/Pishach. So the Hindu sentiments throng to the theatre where 1920 being screened. It is Hanuman (Vikram)Mahima.

  5. really a mind blowing film, the film is a super hit, really a great perfomance by adah sharma, she looks charismatic and also brilliant acting by rajnish duggal, this film is really a treat to watch.

  7. I seen the movie yesterday and it has really overwhelmed me. When I was watching the movie, it looked like I was with them at the time (1920). The picturisation was at the top: clothings of 1920s time, places and transport “wagon trains and classic road trains” of 1920s. They really made you feel like you were back in 1920.

The actors, Regnesh Doggal and Adah Sharma, made it better from good. Their 1920s clothings and their hair style really got my eye. Adah Sharm’s hari style and personality was the key, same with Regnesh Doggal. First they look similar to Dino Morio and Bipasha Basu’s Raaz but at the end they looked better then them.

I read in wikipedia site that Vikram Bhutt mensioned that 1920’s skript was stronger then Raaz (2002) “script which he thought was more powerful than his earlier film Raaz”. Which I think is right. The main reason why Raam performed better at the box office then 1920 is because that film had better songs comparing to 1920s. 1920’s songs were good but where average.

1920 is really at my mide. I hope he (Vikram Bhutt) will make another similar movie agian.

  8. This movie lacks in reality and completely illogical and it was just like watching a comedy movie or a spoof of horror movies like ‘exorcism’ ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose ‘.
