I’ll try to work with biggies also: Ashu Trikha
Ashu Trikha, the ‘different’ director, is back with Zindegi Tere Naam and lot confidence to win fame after two years since his exceptionally flopped Alag. While Alag had its different identity because of the baldy powerhouse hero, Zindegi Tere Naam is zara hatke because of screening Ranjita alongside Mithun Chakrabarty after a long span of 20 years. Lets share few moments with Ashu and try to explore his world of ‘different’ cinema…
Q. Which category does Zindegi Tere Naam belong to?
A. It’s a sweet yet simple love story that I have tried to screen through two generations. One generation is portrayed by Yugal, a young guy, and the second generation is presented well by an aged Yugal. Mithun Chakrabarty is doing the aged Yugal with Ranjita as his screen love.
Q. Your film is tagged as har mahan prem ke piche ek mahan kahani hoti hai (Every great love has a great story to tell). How would you like to describe it?
A. See, there are catalysts that contribute in building up any relation. It needs dedication, understanding, sacrifice and of course love. They all give birth to a love story. When it further intensifies then the love takes the form of a great story.
Q. How the film is different from other films based on love stories?
A. It’s quite different because it shows love stories of two different generations.
Q. It’s humoured as having resemblance with the story of U, Me Aur Hum.
A. Yeah, the story is little like that but it looks quite different on screen. The audience of U, Me Aur Hum can also enjoy Zindegi Tere Naam. I can assure them of watching many new aspects.
Q. The credit of bringing Ranjita back to the screen after 20 years goes completely to you. How was it convincing her after so many years?
A. It was really task for me to find her out as I didn’t know even her address. There came a reporter friend and helped me finding her out. I told her the story on the phone only and she agreed on phone itself. It made my life easy. I think the story worked well very well with her.
Q. Was she the first choice for this character?
A. Actually it owes to the same friend, who gave me her address and phone number. Mithun and Ranjita were popularly coupled in 70s and 80s. Watching them again paired together would be a nice experience for the audience. I talked to Ranjitaji thinking from that angle only. As far as thinking about character is concerned, I didn’t choose anyone for the role.
Q. Apart from direction, you are known as the screenplay writer also. Why did you offer the screenplay to someone else?
A. It’s not necessary to write the films that I am to direct. I got the story completely ready and decided to work on it. Just like this film, my next film also is from another writer.
Q. Your last three films could not leave mark at the box office. How is your expectation with this film?
A. I have expectations with this film. It’s upto the audience to create an impact at the box office. I have nothing in my hand. But I have justified with my job and that is my satisfaction. Take for example Diwanapan. People still love it so much. When people come to know that I have made the film, they stand up in honour of me. It’s not only the film but also the songs that people love very much.
Q. What the reason behind promoting new faces?
A. There is nothing like that. When biggies will like to work with me, I will also start working with them only.
Q. Have you ever talked to those biggies for your films?
A. I don’t talk to biggies all the while as because I feel new faces fit my stories better. People expect much from known faces. At the same time I would have to fulfill the expectations of people that they have related to known faces. If, for example, I take Salman or Shah Rukh in my film and kill them before the interval then people would get disappointed. They will feel characters are not justified at all. At the same time people keep expecting the return of those characters till the end of the film. When they see that their expectations are fruitless, they get disappointed again. But the scenario with new faces is completely different. But I’ll try to work with biggies also.
Q. Will you ever try to explore any other genre than love stories?
A. My next film is not a love story but a serious story based on true incident. There will be senior and known faces in the film. That’s all I can describe about my next film. Rajnee Gupta (SAMPURN)
