A dry welcome, a squabble over media accreditation cards, half-made stalls and special press shows summed up the scene on the eve of the 38th International Film Festival of India here. What set the right ambience for the fest was a performance of Ghumat Ghaz, traditional Goan folk music.

More than 60 artistes, in the age group of eight to 45, performed at the INNOX campus here Thursday evening and enthralled the delegates and other film enthusiasts gathered here for the film fest starting Friday.

“For the first time we are having a Ghumat Ghaz performance on such a large scale in Goa itself. There are small groups of artistes who perform off and on. I have brought them together for the festival,” said Vishnu Surya Wagh, chairman of the programme committee.

“This is just a glimpse. The actual show will be on Nov 28. Today, the artistes are just welcoming the guests,” Wagh told IANS.

“I have written the songs. It took me a month to organise this. These artistes have been rehearsing every day for last one month,” he added.

The right balance and coordination among the performers reflected their hard work. Their fabulous performance enhanced the mood and created the right ambience for the festival.

The cultural programmes, an integral part of the film festival, will start from Nov 28 and will go on till Dec 3.

“The cultural events are spread across the Goa. There are 11 venues and artistes like Shaan, Sadhna Sargam, Sonu Nigam, Marathi singer Suresh Bapat, actress-singer Varsha Usgaonkar and a host of Goan artists will perform. These programmes are especially conceived for the local people,” said Wagh.

In the special screenings Thursday, three foreign films - Norwegian “Reprise” by director Joachim Trier, British director Michael Jaffer’s “Full Circle” and Belgian film “Gilles” by Jan Verheyen, were shown.

From the Indian side, Malayalam movie “Thaniye” by Babu Thiruvalla, Gajendra Ahire’s Marathi film “Mai Baap” and journalist-turned-filmmaker Bhavana Talwar’s Hindi film “Dharm” were screened.

Organisational glitches have not tarnished the festive mood that is expected to reach a crescendo when Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will open the festival Friday.
