Piracy makes big dent in revenue
Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh has said piracy had made a big dent in the fortunes of Bollywood and it could ring in the death-knell for the entertainment industry if not curbed in time.
‘Piracy of music, movies and other entertainment programmes had badly affected the entertainment business’, he lamented yesterday.
Mr Singh was critical of TV channels that mint money in the name of ‘Talent Hunts’ in which public vote through SMS to judge the singer’s ability and talent which is not a perfect tool.
He was speaking at a function wherein Big Music, a Reliance ADAG Venture, launched Singh’s first Gujarati ghazal album titled ”Jeevan Maran Chhe Ek” here.
Yet another masterpiece from the Ghazal King, the album takes listeners on a voyage of emotions, beautifully crafted melodies, set to lyrics of late ghazal writer Abbas V Vasi ‘Mareez’, making it a must for music lovers.
Mr Singh said ”Mareez is the Ghalib of Gujarati poetry and it is an honour composing and singing his poetry.” The Ghazal maestro said with the launch of his maiden Gujarati Ghazal album, his journey into the Indian entertainment industry has come to a full circle as he began his journey with the first Gujarati Bhajan in vernacular language film ‘Bahoo Roopi’ in 1966.
The 8 melodious tracks in the album have been composed and sung by Jagjit Singh with the underlying theme of ‘Love & Peace.’

i agree that piracy is proving a pain in the *** for the entertainment industry, and there is no way it can b stopped. but can it b reduced. i think yes it could be.
1. Cost - Reductiion in cost of the original CDS (remember India is a price sensitive market)
2. Time Factor - If v talk abt movies, even a flop movie’s original takes 2-3 wks (atleast) to come in the market. Now a days a movie’s fate is decided by Sunday. So why the wait. Release the original early, let the company enjoy higher profits and let people buy original instead of pirated.
And i dont know what to say abt Aamir Khan. Remember he released the original of Lagaan after 5 f****** years. And he has no plans of releasing the orginal of Taare Zameen Par earlier either.
3. Uniform availabilty - Why do the producers release original, first in the overseas market and then in India???? (recent example Saawariya)
4. Technology - For music, MP3, MP4 is the in thing. why does’nt company release music in these formats. I say all the companies shud form an agreement and release MP3’s combined, which wud have latest releases, hits, best of, etc, etc. But the pricing has to be affordable. I suggest Rs. 50-60.
5. Schedule - The release of original VCD/DVD shud be scheduled and told to the public in advance. so that a person knows when he can expect the original and perhaps restrain himself from buying the pirated.
6. Regularity - As every week a new movie is released, so shud the originals b released (ofcourse of earlier movies), so that one is busy with original and his funds r invested in buying the original.
These r some of the measures which i think cud help reducing the piracy if not killing it.
