India Fashion Week ends with a glittering finale
Hues of blues and ivory took centre stage at the Wills India Fashion Week late on Sunday, with top designer Rohit Bal unveiling his creations at the grand finale.
Bal’s collection titled “Siyaahi’ drew inspiration from Constantinople, an ancient melting pot of cultures and relations.
A marriage of the east and the west, the collection traversed the entire journey from deserts of the Middle East to Turkey. The colour scheme shifted from neutral to vivid greens and sparkling blues, and finally culminated in a crescendo of colours.
“The collection was actually inspired by the Iznic tiles of Turkey. Tiles that were made centuries ago and that are still being made. The main colour of the collection was blue, which is the main colour used in those tiles,” said Bal.
Voluminous as well as long flowing dresses in shades of blue, ivory, lime-green and black dominated the designer’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection, worn by female models.
The men’s line included sherwanis in different floral prints paired with loose and fitting white trousers.
The couture was a blend of Indian and western sensibilities that stood out for its intricate craftwork and vibrancy.
“There was so much Indian ness in it. He has taken all those multi-colours and put the all in such a compressed tone and that was really beautiful,” said Sunil Sethi, Critic and Chief Executive Director, Alliance Merchandising Company.
The show, dedicated to the late Rohit Khosla, saw an army of prominent designers, including Ritu Kumar, Rohit Gandhi, Rina Dhaka, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Raghavendra Rathore, Puja Nayar, Varun Behl to name a few, walk the ramp.
The collection received a grand applause from an audience of fashionistas and buyers.
Over 40 designers showcased their spring and summer. The show was held for the first time at Pragati Maidan.
Over 80 international buyers from 19 countries and 100 domestic buyers took part this year.
