Music director Khayyam chosen for Lata Mangeshkar award
Renowned music director Khayyam has been chosen for this year’s prestigious Lata Mangeshkar award, instituted by the Maharashtra government for lifetime achievement in the field of film music.
The announcement was made by Cultural Affairs Minster Ashok Chavan yesterday.
The award comprises a cash prize of Rs one lakh, citation and a memento.
Khayyam’s name was unanimously recommended by the select committee comprising Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Rana Jagjeetsinh Patil, Cultural Affairs Secretary Bhushan Gagrani, Santoor maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, Film-maker N Chandra, Singer Suresh Wadkar, Pt Satish Vyas, Pt Ajay Pohankar and Datta Mahulkar.
Khayyam would be presented with the award at a special function to be held at New Delhi next month on Lata Mangeshkar’s birthday, which falls on September 28.
Mohammed Zaheer Khayyam Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, became a household name with his songs in Footpath, Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain, Lala Rukh, Shagun, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aakhri Khat and Phir Subah Hogi. His all time musical hit is Umrao Jaan, which brought glory not only to him but also to Asha Bhonsle for her beautiful rendering of the songs ‘In aankhon ki masti ke’, ‘ye kya jagah hai doston’ and ‘dil cheez kya hai’, all composed by Khayyam.
