Sanjay Dutt records song with Bappi Lahiri

This has got to be the most unlikely coming together in the music world. Composer-singer Bappi Lahiri and actor Sanjay Dutt have together warbled a dreamy ballad for “Alibaug”.

The song “Raat khamosh hai subah bolegi”, written by Neelesh Misra, was composed by Bappi Lahiri’s son Bappa … and this is his first composition.

Producer Sanjay Gupta, who will be using the Dutt-Lahiri ballad for the promotional video of “Alibaug”, says he has never seen anything like this before.

“Sanju has been singing quite often these days. He sang in my film ‘Zinda’. Then he even did a duet with Asha Bhosle. But in ‘Raat khamosh hai’ Sanju carries the notes like a true professional,” Gupta told IANS.

The manner in which the actor managed the intricate notes has spurred him on to seriously consider cutting an album on his own.

Gupta says this is the first time Bappi has sung for his son.

“Bappa created a fantastic composition. I wanted a New Orleans Jazz-Blues kind of feel to the tune. Bappa gave me exactly that. I’m a big fan of Bappi da. When he agreed to sing for ‘Alibaug’ it was a special occasion for my production house and for him. This is the first time that Bappi da has sung for his son. It was an emotional moment for all of us,” said Gupta.

At first Dutt was shy about matching chords with the veteran composer-singer.

“But soon they hit it off like two music-minded people always do. It was great fun for all of us to watch them sing together,” added Gupta.

Bappi is also thrilled with this new experiment.

“Sanju has always been my favourite. He has sung some of my biggest hits like ‘Tamma tamma’. But this was a different territory. I not only sang ‘Raat khamosh hai’ with him, we also shot the music video together.

“And to have my son Bappa make me sing his first song! Many decades ago I had sung my father Aparesh Lahiri’s first song. Now for ‘Alibaug’ I’ve sung for my own son. This is the first time since ‘Amar Prem’ (in which Sachin Dev Burman sang for son Rahul) that a father-composer has sung for his son.”

“Alibaug” is Gupta’s biographical film and Dutt will play his own self in it. Other characters, played by Rohit Roy, R. Madhavan and Sanjay Suri, will resemble his real-life friends. Mandira Bedi, Gul Panag, Dia Mirza and Manasi Joshi Roy will play female leads in the film.

Unlike Gupta’s earlier flicks “Kaante” and “Zinda”, this one is going to be a non-violent film.
