Indian TV not lived up to initial promise: Rahul Bose
Bollywood celebrities like Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan may rave about the small screen in India having become even bigger than the big screen but actor Rahul Bose feels that television in India was yet to match up to the high standards of its counterparts in Hollywood.
India television was not even able to meet the high quality that Indian cinema had displayed in the last few years, Rahul maintained.
”Unlike Indian cinema, which has produced some brilliant films in recent years like ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, ‘Being Cyrus’ and ‘Omkara’, all of which perfectly match up to International standards of filmmaking, Indian television has unfortunately failed to live up to the promise raised by serials like ‘Buniyaad’ and ‘Hum Log’ emenating from the small screen the 70s,” he said.
”TV in the country has not come up with any great work like they come up with in the West,” the actor said at an event here last night to announce the launch of ‘Entourage’, an Emmy award winning TV series, on HBO.
Launched by HBO Asia senior vice president for programming and presentation Robert Lyons and HBO South Asia country manager Shruti Bajpai, ‘Entourage’, to be aired on HBO from July 15 at 2200hrs, offers a peek into the highs and lows of celebrity life in Hollywood.
Gracing the launch of the series, Rahul Bose said, ”great TV is all about good writing and good acting. If the script is good and the performances are above par, then the show is bound to be a success, all of which aptly describes ‘Entourage’, a series which perfectly captures the glitz and glamour that accompanies celebrity life in Hollywood. In a way, it holds an accurate mirror to showbiz life in the US.” Stating that Indian TV serials could well take a ”leaf out of Entourage’s book”, the actor said,”although there is no dearth of good writers in Indian television, the intention does not seem to be there on part of the producers to back up their shows with good writing, which has resulted in mediocrity setting in on the television screen.” Speaking on the occasion, Ms Bajpai said, ”Entourage will find a ready connect with every young Indian who dares all for success.
For those who dream of making it in the world of showbiz, need dating or swear on the latest style mantra, this series will be just spot on.” A funny, often risqué, rauncy telling of the temptation of life of an upcoming actor, ‘Entourage’ revolves around Vince Chase, a hot young movie star whose career is just taking off. To share the fun of his rise and keep him grounded, Vince looks to his long time pals from Queens, his entourage of friends- Eric, Vince’s best friend and manager who is learning the rules of Hollywood as he tries to help Vince make the right decisions; Drama, Vince’s half brother and actor whose acting aspirations have been overshadowed by Vince’s success; and Turtle, the least experienced of the group who is always looking to have a good time.
Mr Bose said as an actor in the Mumbai film industry, there were some aspects of Vince’s life that resonated in his own life too.
”The creative integrity that Vince tries to maintain in face of temptations on the road to stardom is something that has parallels with my own life,” he said.
