‘Gandhikatha’ becomes popular in Mehsana
After Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt popularised ‘Gandhigiri’ in ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, Narayanbhai Desai, son of personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi, has been successfully spreading message of the Father of the Nation through his ‘Gandhi Katha’ or recitation of Bapu’s life story.
‘Gandhikatha’ has been drawing a large number of audience in the small towns of North Gujarat, including Patan, Deesa, Bhuj and now in Mehsana, some 70 km from the state capital of Gandhinagar.
”Though Gandhigiri of Munnabhai has little relevance with the Gandhikatha, the impact that Munnabhai has left on the youngsters is worth noting. They have started taking interest in a forgotten story of Gandhiji,” said Rajubhai Patel, Campus Director of Sarvajanik Vidya Vartul, where a week-long recitation of Gandhikatha is underway.
”Unlike the traditional Ramkatha by Moribapu, Gandhikatha has different objective, different theme and also different audience,” said Mr Patel.
”The chief objective of Katha is not to draw masses, but to spread Bapu’s message among masses. Relevance of Gandhi is a sustainable phenomena,” he said.
”The Ramdhun and the recital of ‘bhajans’, close to the heart of Mahatma, by Special Groups from Nupur Musical Party steal the show, providing peace and solace,” he added.
