Chinese director’s film set for Mumbai release
Internationally acclaimed Chinese director Yimou Zhang’s lavishly opulent action spectacle “Curse of the Golden Flower” is set to hit Mumbai theatres Friday.
“For the time being the film is being released in Mumbai, and afterwards it will travel to other cities as well. The dates are not confirmed yet,” said Peter Martis, official spokesperson for Sony Pictures Releasing, India.
Martis also said that Sony Pictures is making an effort to bring the best of international cinema to India and the release of this film was part of that initiative.
Set in 10th century China, the film focuses on a dysfunctional imperial family. The historical action film reflects the hedonism of the later Tang Dynasty and shows deep secrets hidden beneath its grandeur and glamour.
Zhang has been a well-known name in the global film circuit since his directorial debut “Red Sorghum” (1987) won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. And his Oscar-nominated “House of Flying Daggers”, which won multiple international awards, enhanced his position in the global film market.
Zhang is also an accomplished actor and the winner of best actor award at the Tokyo International Film Festival for his performance in “Old Well” (1986).
The director gives importance to visual composition in his films and to heighten the sense of opulence in “Curse of the Golden Flower”, he has used golden colour extensively in the sets as well as the costumes.
Colourful Chinese art glass is used to intensify hues and translucence in the pillars, walls, windows, and many decorative items in the palace.
