Shilpa Shetty accuses 'lunatic fringe' for kissing controversy

Indian actress Shilpa Shetty has accused a 'lunatic fringe' for triggering a controversy over the kissing episode, when actor Richard Gere kissed her repeatedly on-stage.

The actress, who is promoting her latest film in Australia, also blamed the media for being irresponsible and added that a celebrity has to pay the price for someone else's negligence.

"The media tends to get slightly irresponsible at times but that's the price one has to pay for celebrity," the BBC quoted her, as saying.

Shilpa also insisted that Gere was just 'being sweet' and the whole incident has been, 'blown out of proportion'.

The controversy began after Gere kissed Shilpa during an AIDS awareness programme in Delhi, India.

A warrant was issued for Gere's arrest setting off a protest from senior lawyers who said that there was no 'legal merit in the case'.

Later, the judge, Dinesh Gupta, who issued the warrant was transferred from Jaipur to the town of Kishangarh.

But, authorities insisted that the transfer was a routine one and for 'administrative reasons'.
