President Kalam has a Shilpa Shetty moment!
President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam’s 40-minute speech to the European Parliament evoked a standing ovation in the end, but what he never expected probably was a ‘jaadu ki jappi’ he got when he walked out of the hall.
A middle-aged lady of Indian origin overcome with excitement on being able to get up close with the president, gave him a hug, briefly resting her head on his shoulder, captured the moment on her cell phone and left the President visibly embarrassed. The lady runs a popular Indian restaurant in Strasbourg called ‘Punjab da Dhaba’.
The President’s speech delivered earlier was high on spiritual content, linking science with spiritualism. He liberally quoted from ancient Tamil texts, peppered with poetry and personal anecdotes.
Deviating from his prepared text, he ended the speech with a poem that he had composed for the address.
Kalam’s reputation as a scientist, teacher, poet and a deeply spiritual person is well established. There are no generalisations when he speaks…each theory that he propagates is liberally garnished with incidents that have taken place in his life and left indelible impressions.
And, he seeks audience participation….he doesnt like silent audiences. Proabably, that is why the President’s speeches are so intensely personal, even in a forum like the European Parliament where form and decorum are a given. President Kalam definitly made an impression…a lasting one.
