Nearly two decades after Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh’s death, his son Kamal is reviving his father’s lyrics.

Having gained popularity worldwide, Amar Singh earned the title of ‘Chamkeela’. “Chamkeela”, in Punjabi means ‘one that glitters’.

The singing legend was remembered on his 19th death anniversary at his native Dugri village near Ludhiana.

Amar Singh was born as Dunni Ram. In his initial years, Singh worked as a labourer at a cloth mill. Later, he earned fame by writing lyrics and singing folk on stage.

“People still like him (Amar Singh Chamkeela) as they come to visit us as far as from Canada and America. We get phone calls and his rural fans still visit us,” said Kamal.

Every year, in the month of March, the village of Dugri comes alive in Amar Singh’s memory.

A memorial has been built in the village in Chamkeela’s memory.

Chamkeela’s first record was released in 1979.

“Today’s singers follow in his footsteps. Chamkeela lives on with his songs,” says vocalist Surinder Sonia.

The tradition of duet singing is still alive and credit for this goes to singers like Amar Singh.
