Cricket themed films from Bollywood
As Indian fans get ready to cheer Dravid’s men to win the cricket World Cup beginning today, the country’s other big passion - Bollywood is also joining the frenzy with the release of a number of cricket related films.
“It is understandable that the film industry is worried about collections during this period, so the best thing would be to hop onto the world cup bandwagon and come out with films that will interest audiences,” trade analysts say.
As the world cup gets into its first week, UTV will release “Hattrick”, a “lighthearted film that centres around cricket,” while others such as “Mirabai not out” and “Salaam India” are also in various stages of completion.
“It is so much better to build on something that creates so much passion in India rather than attempt to fight it. We look at the world cup as an opportunity to cash in on the huge craze for cricket in India rather than as a hit to the movie business,” says Siddharth Roy Kapur Executive VP Marketing, Distribution, Syndication of UTV.
Director Milan Luthria also admits that the idea for Hattrick came from the fact “that it would be nice to have a film at the time of the cricket world cup.” The film centres around the lives of five people who have cricket in common, he adds.
