Bollywood personalities, politicians raise voice for malnourished children

Bollywood personalities and politicians have raised their voices for millions of children suffering from malnourishment despite the booming economy.

They visited Rampura, a tribal village, in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior District, to get first hand information on the problems of rural children.

The tour was organised by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Touched by the plight of the poor, singer Penaz Masani said efforts should be made to see that Government provisions reach the malnourished children.

“One or two things we have seen are really depressing. But, we should not be saddened but should find a way through which the government provisions can reach the needy,” Penaz said.

Masani, along with MP Sachin Pilot and Shahnawaz Hussain interacted with the villagers and local officials to figure out the reason for malnourishment among children despite huge government grants.

“Our policies and money allocated is reaching them but not completely. We have to see all the aspects and work together to end the problem,” said, Pilot.

A survey conducted by the Health Ministry, backed by the UNICEF has found that the number of undernourished children below the age of three has increased in some states despite a rise in per capita income and robust economic growth.

Poor hygiene condition and illiteracy among women particularly in rural areas are among the prime causes of malnutrition in children.
