Bollywood film financier and diamond merchant Bharat Shah has filed a complaint with police that he had received threatening calls from a Dubai-based man, officials said today.

“He filed a complaint yesterday saying that one Shetty has been issuing threats to his life through telephone calls,” a senior police official of Malbar Hill police station said.

The official said Shah had alleged that he was threatened with “dire consequences” if he filed any police case regarding a dispute over some property in suburban Goregaon.

The financier is said to be embroiled in a property dispute with the directors of Royal Palms India Private Limited, which has a multi-acre recreation centre including a golf course and a star hotel in Goregaon.

Shah alleged the caller had said that he would “wipe out” the financier and his family. He quoted the caller as saying, “And it will not be good for you if you do not stay out of the property or take action regarding it…He said he would wipe out me and my whole family.” A release from Royal Palms claimed that it had been falsely implicated in the issue and that Shah and others are adopting desperate measures since they have no legal stand in the matter.

Mumbai’s Crime Branch, which has in the past investigated Shah’s alleged links with fugitive gangsters, ruled out the underworld’s involvement in the threats.

“It seems to have come out of some property dispute. We are in touch with the concerned police station and will investigate the underworld aspect as the caller is said to be based in Dubai,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kamlakar told reporters here.
