Music aficionados here are getting an evening to cherish tomorrow when sarod legend Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and tabla wizard Ustad Zakir Hussain perform together for the first time in the city.

“Bangalore today has become the centre of the world not just India. I love the flavour of the state (Karnataka) and its appreciative audience,” the sarod maestro told reporters on the eve of the concert.

Reminisceing about the “strong links” of Hindustani music with the royal family of Mysore, he recalled that Ustad Abdul Karim Khan — doyen of Hindustani music and a contemporary of Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan (his father) — was a court musician in the Royal Durbar.

“I have performed in Mysore many times and love the tradition and culture of the city,” the Ustad said.

“There is a nice balance of north and south in the state (Karnataka) and in South India in general,” he said.

Lamenting over the fallout of globalisation which has brought in “total westernisation in people, who look down upon our own culture in some places”, he said, in the South there is a “fine-balance” between technology and tradition.

Music defies any classification, the virtuoso said.

“Whether it is fusion or modern music, any music which is appealing is worth listening. We must not, however, forget our classical music and dance which is the unique identity of our country,” Amjad Ali Khan said.
