Anjolie Ela Menon chosen for French award
Veteran artist and Padmashri Anjolie Ela Menon has been chosen for the prestigious ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government.
The award, which will be conferred on Menon by the French Ambassador to India Dominique Girard here tomorrow, is a recognition of her contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in the field of art.
The ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’ is conferred on persons who have distinguished themselves by their creativity in the field of art, culture and literature or for their contribution to the influence of the arts in France and throughout the world.
Known for her works which have been acquired by museums in India and abroad, Menon’s association with France spans from the 1960s when she joined the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, on a French government scholarship.
Earlier, the awarded has been conferred on noted film critic and editor Aruna Vasudev, academician Alka Pande and chairman of Triveni Industries Dhruv Sawhney.
Some of the Indians who have been honoured with the highest French civilian distinction ‘Legion d’Honneur’ are film director Satyajit Ray, sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, filmstar Amitabh Bachchan, playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, industrialist Deepak Banker, columnist Dilip Padgaonkar and scientist C N R Rao.
