Sarod legend launches collectors album
A collection of rare ragas and musical compositions spanning more than four decades of Sarod legend Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’s musical career was launched at a glittering function here.
The launch last evening was followed by a recital by the Ustad himself, leaving the packed audience enthralled.
“This collection is a tribute to all the beautiful moments of my life which include the ‘fireworks’ of sixties and seventies when I was younger,” said the sixth-generation sarod player in his family.
The four-volume CD pack “Portrait of a Legend” by ‘Music Today’ contains live recordings and rare pictures from the archives of the artist.
“It is a momentous occasion for our family and whatever could be done with the sarod has been done by my father, and this collection is a just tribute to him,” said Ayaan Ali Bangash, his son.
Khan, who was taught by his father Hafiz Ali Khan said the Senior Khan had the greatest influence on him. “My father emphasised on the importance of compostions to preserve the ragas, and I have tried to carry forward that tradition.” “The Ustad is one of the greatest legends of the world who has given a Indian classical music a new dimension with his unique style, and it was great honour to work with the ustadji,” said Gurmeet Singh, Business Director, Music Today.
Khan started his evening’s recital with ‘Raga Saraswati’ followed with many of his famous compositions including ‘Raga Zila Kafi’ and others.
