Saif Ali Khan hospitalised with chest pain

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was tonight admitted in a suburban hospital after he experienced chest pain.

“Sometime around 9:30 pm, Khan arrived here complaining of pain in the chest and was admitted for further examination,” Narendra Trivedi, Vice President of Leelavati Hospital in suburban Bandra, said.

The 36-year-old actor is currently being examined and it was too premature to say what the reason for the pain was, Trivedi said.

Khan, who was adjudged for the Star Dust award for the best negative role in “Omkara”, was rehearsing for his dance performance at the award-giving function when he complained of chest pain.

Saif, son of yesteryear cricketer Mansur Ali Khan and actress Sharmila Tagore, complained of chest pain just before the Star Dust award function was to begin, sources said.

He was then admitted to Leelavati Hospital in Bandra, they added.

Saif, who also won the award for the best actor in a villainous role for his performance in the film “Omkara”, was was not present to receive it.

Totally unaware of Khan’s ailment, director of “Omkara”, Vishal Bharadwaj had joked while receiving the award for Saif saying, “Saif, I know you are always late for shooting but I didn’t know you would be late for an award function as well. Where are you?” As news of Saif taking ill and admitted to hospital spread, his sister-actress Soha Ali Khan, director of hit-movie “Parineeta” (in which Saif acts) Pradeep Sarkar, actress Preity Zinta and actor Fardeen Khan reached the hospital.

Saif, who began his Bollywood career with “Parampara” in 1993, has had a dream run since last year with two films featuring him–Parineeta and Omkara–turning out to be super hits.

Saif Ali Khan had undergone an apendicitis operation in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur in March last year when he had gone to Malayasia for the shoot of a commercial.

Stardust Editor Sonali Zafar said Saif had returned from a tour of South Africa last night and had come to the set for rehearsing the dance at 0200 hours today and again practised for three hours from 1400 hours.

It was during the practise that Saif suddenly felt his heart beats were irregular and he was rushed to hospital, she said.

Saif Ali Khan, who has been admitted to the Leelavati Hospital in suburban Bandra earlier this evening, has undergone an angiography and his condition is stable, Trivedi said adding he is likely to be discharged within the next two days.

He said Saif’s condition was stable.

Director Sudhir Mishra, who visited Saif in the hospital, said his condition was fine and that he was recovering well.

Saif’s sister, Soha Ali Khan, said her brother was fine and was resting presently.

“All the tests have been clear and an angiography has been done. He had some chest pain and admitted himself to the hospital to make sure that everything was fine.” Directors Ken Ghosh and J P Datta, actors John Abraham and Fardeen Khan were among those who visited Khan in the hospital.

A huge crowd of fans and curious onlookers gathered near the hospital.
