Renowned stand up comedian to perform in India for first time
Russell Peters, one of the world’s finest stand up comedians is all set to entertain audiences in India for the first time.
Russell who has hosted the popular chat show “Network East Late” on the BBC and has interviewed well known Indian film makers including the late Ismail Merchant and Gurindar Chadha of “Bend it like Beckham” fame, will perform soon in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi as part of “Russell Peters Live” India tour 2007.
Going down the memory lane, Russell who is of Indian origin (Kolkata) though born and brought up in Toronto said, “It’s great to be performing in India. The act is going to be awful. Having said that I just want the folks to fall off their chairs”, he chuckled.
Comedy, says this rib-tickler, is “difficult”. Russell whose acts started making rounds on the internet says “I can’t be repetitive, I’ve got to be sharp, what with my fans downloading my stand ups”.
“I talk about different races, different experiences of my own which are very real. However, I stay away from religion”, he said.
To a question on whether he was different from what he portrayed, Peters said “It is not a put on. I am just myself and I am enjoying it as I am raking in dough by being me”.
Starting his career in 1989, he gained worldwide popularity in 2003 when US executives heard his sound clips and his acts ruled the internet. Russell’s acts are based on immigrant communities around the world; from Indian, Arab, Chinese, Fillipino, Korean to South East Asian Communities.
It is ironic observations about race and class illuminating human shortcomings that gives him an edge over other comedians.
Russell who has many awards in his hat is working on “deal with a Los Angeles-based production company”.
He said he is upbeat about some of his forthcoming hollywoord movies like “The Take” and another where he is a gay.
Russell Peters is peforming in Bangalore on Feb 27 and Feb 28.
