Noted Marathi writer Kishore Shantabai Kale, whose autobiography created a literary sensation in Maharashtra, has died.

He was 37.

Kale passed away last night at a hospital in Solapur, over 600 km from here. He was undergoing treatment there after being injured in a road accident on February 3.

Kale’s autobiography, `Kolhatyacha Por’, was not only a dramatic and moving story of an individual’s struggle to break free, it also brought to light a world and a lifestyle of the Kolhati community of tamasha dancers of western Maharashtra.

In the intense, stark autobiography, he reconstructed the events of his life as the illegitimate son of a Kolhati tamasha dancer. Abandoned by his mother, neglected and maltreated by his grandparents, uncles and aunts, ridiculed in school and college for his fatherless status, he was tested again and again by life.

Fired with rare courage and determination to change his life and be free, he educated himself and went on to become a doctor - the first in his community.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil have condoled Kale’s demise.

“We have lost a sensitive writer who portrayed the pains of Kolhati comunity,” Deshmukh said. “Kale was a doctor and also a writer who brought forth reality of Kolhati community”, Patil said.
