The Gulshan Kumar murder case is likely to be reopened after the arrest of 1993 serial bomb blasts accused Abdul Qayyum Shaikh as he is said to be a prime accused along with extradited gangster Abu Salem in the conspiracy to eliminate the music baron.

Kumar was shot dead while on his way to a temple in North West Mumbai suburb of Andheri on August 12, 1997. Only one of the 19 accused in the case was convicted by a trial court on April 24, 2002.

According to a high-ranking police officer here, Shaikh, then holed up in Dubai, had allegedly given instrcutions to the shooter in the case along with Salem and is a “prime conspirator”.

Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told PTI today that the case can be reopened if the police comes up with evidence showing Shaikh’s involvement in the murder conspiracy.

Music director Nadeem Shravan has been shown as an absconding accused in the case while Director of the rival music company TIPS, Ramesh Taurani, was also acquitted on charges of paying Rs 25 lakh to Salem as contract money to eliminate Kumar.

Shravan is based in London and is alleged to have been involved in the case as Kumar did not “properly promote” his music album released in 1997.

Shaikh, who had been hiding in Dubai for the last 15 years, was arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch from a hotel in North East Mumbai yesterday.

He has been booked under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and was remanded to police custody till March 8 by a local court today.
