Grammy Awards winner Ozomatli band to rock Delhi

Rock music buffs in Delhi, Bangalore and Chandigarh will have a rare treat when Grammy Awards winner Ozomatli band performs during its ten-day tour to India.

US Embassy’s Cultural Affairs First Secretary Robin D. Diallo said the coming of Ozomatli will reinforce Indo-US cultural ties.

“The band Ozomatli is here to share the idea of multi-culture diversity. And, yes, we share the idea because both the United States and India are multi-cultural societies and the band Ozamatli actually represents the culture of diversity that is United States and India,” said Diallo.

This performance will also give Indian youth a chance to understand about their American counterparts.

“It reaches out to the young and this is what young people of the United States are listening. This is the music which is on the radio. So we wanted to share what young people are listening in the United States. This will be a great way for Indian youth to understand little bit about American youth,” said Diallo.

The multi-ethnic band has a good share of Indian influences, including a tabla player. Their music ranges from lively Latino to Hip Hop and rock. They have toured with greats such as Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews Band, and Lenny Kravitz.

The Los Angeles-based band will perform in the capital on February 13, at the Ashok Hotel.

Apart from an enthused exchange with the audience, the Ozamatli is also looking forward to fuse their frequencies with Indian artistes.

Jiro Yamaguchi an artiste from the Ozomatli band picked up the tabla after attending Ustad Zakir Hussain’s performance at a concert.

Ozomatli’s unique ability to integrate instruments from around the globe into dazzling tunes is at the core of its extraordinary musical fusion. The group’s latest album “Don’t Mess with the Dragon” is due for release in India this month by Universal records.

The band will travel to Nepal after India visit.
