Sport Movies International Festival
If you are a sports fan who loves movies, then Mumbai is the place to be from January 18 to 21 as the second edition of the Sport Movies International Festival gets underway in the city.
More than 80 films from 32 countries will be screened at the four-day festival in the city, most of them having sports as their theme.
Noted film actor Naseeruddin Shah, cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, Billiards player Michael Ferreira will be among the jury members for the festival.
Speaking about the festival, Manjrekar said, “Everyone normally asks for my opnion about the state of cricket, but I am glad that there is someone who is interested in my opinion about films as well.” When asked whether films like these would improve the sporting culture in the country, he said, “Let us not kid ourselves that a few films or festivals would change anything. But definitely films like `Iqbal’ or `Lagaan’ have made a difference.” Started in 1982, the Sport Movies and TV” festival is one of the most popular festivals in Milan, Italy. Some of the biggest names from Hollywood as well as from European cinema have participated in the festival.
This is also the only worldwide festival dedicated to sports and movies and is organised by the Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs (FICTS) which has 100 countries as its members with the patronage of the IOC.
