Shilpa’s fans go berserk with joy over her victory
Fans of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty based in Mumbai rejoiced over her victory in the British Channel 4 reality television show ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, saying that she had made her country proud.
“I think she’s really made us proud. With all the controversy she has been through… I have been reading in the newspaper that she has been so pampered and protected and besides everything if she’s won it, she has done a great job and we are really proud of it,” said Preeti, a fan.
“It’s great. In spite of being abroad and playing in the Big Brother house, she has made India proud. There was so much of controversy faced by Shilpa Shetty, yet she won. It is a great achievement for India. And we all are happy for her,” Milind, another fan added in a similar vein.
College student Sunanda said the treatment meted out to Shetty on the show ensured that her victory was a cakewalk.
“People did not like Jade Goody commenting on her You are an Indian. She made something for them and they did not like it. So she got a lot of support from the audience and I am happy she won it,” said Sunanda.
Thirty-one-year old Shetty burst into tears after the results were announced, and described the entire experience as incredible and overwhelming. She thanked the audience for giving her an opportunity to make her country proud.
Shetty emerged as everyone’s favourite following a racist row, kicked up by fellow contestant Jade Goody.
Host Davina McCall, however, told Shetty that Goody had no intention of being racist.
Pop star Michael Jackson’s brother, Jermaine Jackson, was adjudged the runners-up followed by actor Dirk Benedict, who starred in the 1980s television series “The A-Team”.
The other contestants were former beauty queen Danielle Lloyd, who earlier apologized for her remarks to Shetty and Goody’s boyfriend Jack Tweed who was evicted during the final show last night.
Singer Ian Watkins was in the fourth place, followed by Lloyd and Tweed, who were both implicated in the racist row, besides singer Jo O’Meara.
The other contestants, including Goody, were either voted out or walked off the show over the past few weeks. Goody’s eviction from the show last week was hailed as a victory of good over evil.
After being evicted, Goody was shown a video of her behaviour in the house and, she was remorseful over her behaviour towards Shilpa.
Indian authorities had asked Britain to check if racism laws were broken. British politicians have been quick to weigh in behind Shetty, but insisted her treatment on the show did not reflect prejudices in society at large.
The episode triggered a media furore in India and Britain and was still on the front pages of newspapers until a few days ago.
The Indian Diaspora forms two per cent of the British population. Shilpa has found support in that circle as well.
