Shilpa’s decision to join TV show not very brave: Mother
As the Shilpa Shetty racial abuse episode snowballed into a controversy, the Bollywood starlet’s mother today said her decision to take part in the reality TV show was not a brave one.
“As a mother I did not think it was a very courageous and a brave decision of her wanting to sit in a fish bowl and be watched 24 hours. As a film star, she does not need to do it,” Sunanda Shetty told NDTV.
She said that as a film celebrity her daughter gets a completely different treatment in India.
“She is waited upon, she has an entourage travelling with her, I travel with her, she is never on her own. Everything is done for her but she thought that she wanted to experience this on her own,” she said.
“May be it would also show her something of the other side of life,” she added.
A row erupted over alleged racist remarks against Shilpa on the UK’s popular reality TV show ‘Big Brother’.
Shilpa is allegedly the target of racist attacks by fellow contestants, some of whom called her a “dog” and drove her to tears, touching off a wave of protests from Asians living in Britian.
The issue was even raised in the British Parliament after which Prime Minister Tony Blair said racism should be opposed in all its forms. The Indian government has also asked the Britain to take action as per the country’s laws.
