Govt to help develop Indian film industry
The Government today said it will take steps to strengthen and further develop the Indian film industry and raise its share in the global film market to over five per cent in 2007 from the present two per cent.
“Steps are under consideration to increase the global visibility and acceptability of Indian cinema, including increased presence at various film festivals like the Cannes,” Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said at the inauguration of the India chapter of the US-Asia Business Forum.
The Minister said five core groups, set up for the purpose, are expected to submit their suggestions/ recommendations soon, “and based on these necessary action will be initiated.” Dasmunsi said in order to improve the quality of film scripts, plans are afoot to upgrade two film training institutes/schools.
“Though the filmmakers enjoy considerable freedom in the treatment of their steps, censorship of films is still needed in India,” he added.
