Affidavits filed vouching for Sanjay Dutt’s character
Thespian Dilip Kumar, former sheriff of Mumbai, Nana Chudasama, and social workers Yusuf Merchant and Vipula Kadri today filed affidavits before the special court conducting the 1993 serials blasts case trial, vouching for actor Sanjay Dutt’s character.
The affidavits were filed along with an application by Dutt asking that he not be sentenced to a jail term and be released under the Probation of Offenders Act.
Dutt was convicted by the special Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court here under the Arms Act for the illegal possession of an AK-56 assault rifle.
In their affidavits, Kumar and the others have stated that Dutt has a good moral character and were sure that he would not commit any crime if released by the court.
Dutt in his application, which he personally appeared in court to file, has stated that there were no incidents of bad behaviour recorded against him and he came from a family closely associated with social work.
Dutt has also pointed to the fact that his wife Richa has passed away due to cancer and he needed to take care of his daughter Trishala, presently a law student in the US, since her grandfather there was old and ailing.
The actor also drew the court’s attention to the fact he had been making socially relevant films like ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ for which he received plaudits from the film industry.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said that the CBI would strongly oppose this application given the gravity of the crime that Dutt had been found guilty of.
The application will be heard by the court on January 18 when the bail granted by the court to Dutt for his surrender will expire.
