Sanjay Dutt seeks for divine intervention
With two days to go for Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s bail to expire in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombing case, the actor Sunday offered prayers at a temple here seeking divine intervention.
Dressed in a white kurta-pyjama, the 47-year-old Dutt, performed a four-hour elaborate prayer at the Siddivinayak temple.
Looking composed during the entire ritual, Dutt said: “I have tremendous faith in Lord Siddhivinayak and have been coming here to offer my prayers for a long time. I am confident that the Lord will protect me.”
The actor has been a regular visitor to the temple through the 13-year trial, visiting it before any important decision.
Dutt, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai bombing that killed 257 people, was found guilty of illegal possession of weapons by the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Preventive) Act (TADA) court under section 3 and 7 of the Arms Act on Nov 28.
The court gave Dutt time till Dec 19 to surrender.
It had, however, absolved Dutt of more serious charges of conspiracy and helping the terrorists under TADA.
On Dec 19, Dutt’s lawyers are expected to seek extension of the actor’s bail. If his bail plea is rejected, Dutt will have to spend his time in jail till the quantum of his sentence is given out.
The court is likely to start delivering the quantum of sentences from the first week of January 2007 to 100 of the 123 accused found guilty.
The star, who has already spent 18 months in jail in 1993-94, had been out on bail before he was found guilty. He stands to serve a minimum of one year to a maximum of 10 years under the Arms Act.
