Indian cinema through posters
Posters get a major credit for attracting audiences to the movie theatres.
A two-day rare exhibition of film posters was organised here on Thursday, depicting the history of Indian cinema from 1924 to 2006.
The exhibition of poster arts had all the glossy and gray of the Gods of the silver screen.
The posters took one through a journey of Indian cinema.
Posters of ‘Aadmi’, ‘Deewar’, ‘Mughal-e-Azam’,’ Accident’, ‘Chaudhvin-ka-Chand’, ‘Tere Ghar ke Samne’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Sutradhar’ and Prabhat company posters on display gave a glimpse of the golden days of the Hindi cinema.
Regional cinema posters ranging from Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and more lured one at the exhibition.
The exposition organised by the Film Federation of India and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce at Alliance Franoise opened up the history of film posters.
One of the organisers of Alliance Franoise, Eric Rousseau said, it was a great opportunity to look at the history of Indian cinema through film posters.
“The film poster exhibition is a great eye opener and a great treat to film lovers,” said Rousseau.
The Indian film industry is the largest in the world in terms of number of films. For instance 877 feature films and 1177 short films made in India were released in 2003 alone compared with 473 films released in the US that year. The Indian cinema is also home to the biggest film city in the world, Ramoji Film City.
