Bollywood stars make audience spellbound

A galaxy of Bollywood stars, including Shilpa Shetty and Rahul Bose, kept the audience spellbound for nearly three hours at a concert here to raise awareness about preventing HIV infections.

Kailash Kher belted out some of his memorable numbers while TV actress Mona ‘Jassi’ Singh performed a dance number with children trained by choreographer Shiamak Davar at the National Stadium to mark the World AIDS Day today.

The cultural show, organised by National AIDS Control Organisation and UNAIDS, was aimed at educating and creating awareness among children and youth about HIV-AIDS and its implications.

An exhibition - a laser show, puppetry programmes and pantomines - the best media to catch the attention of young minds were also organised across the capital to mark the day.

Earlier in the day, President A P J Abdul Kalam addressed Members of Parliament and asked them to ensure that a robust legislation is drawn up within six months to check discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients.

Kalam also released a postal stamp to commemorate World AIDS Day.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said there was an urgent need to combat “one of the greatest global challenges of our times” and asked MPs to spread the message besides providing support services for the victims.

The World Health Organisation has urged countries to scale up HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services in order to avoid an all out epidemic.

A unique photo exhibition of people living healthy and transformed lives after undergoing HIV/AIDS treatment is open for public at the American Centre here.
