Bangladesh’s `Nirontor’ vies for Golden Peacock at IFFI

Bangladesh’s official entry for the Oscars, “Nirontor”, is making the rounds of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here and vying for the coveted Golden Peacock award.

“The film is also competing in the upcoming Kerala International Film Festival and another fest at Chennai. We expect good prospects at the 79th Academy Awards where `Nirontor’ will compete in the foreign language film category,” Abu Syeed, the film’s director, told PTI.

Riding on publicity and applause garnered at international film festivals, the film is going to make it to the Oscar nomination round, feels Sayeed, who is competing for the coveted award for the first time.

“We don’t get government financing for making films. Let me admit we don’t have huge money to spend for promotion at the Oscars,” he said.

“Nirontor”, a 105-minute film produced by Bangladesh- based Impress Telefilm, makes a statement on the life of a sex worker and the people around her.

“The film is a fairly non-judgmental look at the lives of Tithi, the call girl, her family and the people she comes in contact with,” Sayeed explained.

Ruing the lack of film culture in Bangladesh, Sayeed said a few filmmakers who began producing short movies in the 1980s had now ventured into making full-length movies.
